Forums - Gaming - Blu-ray for gaming?

I have a mysterious question. Sony owns blu-ray along with some other company. If it becomes a sucess, and nintendo or micro$oft decides to use it,Would sony be making tons of money off the 720/wii 2 games? I think thats one of the main reason they put blu-ray on the ps3. So people can make it a sucess, then make other game developers use it and start making millions of dollars. What is your take on this?

No. I personally don't think so. It IS very much a possibility. and if so happens, yes it will make Sony a lot of money.

BUT, I think both MS and Nintendo would go HD-VMD??? - That other tech that uses red lasers and 30GB discs. Apparently it is the same costing as DVD players so they wouldn't have to pay much at all to the Developer of this tech - then for movies would all go Download and skip blue-ray player altogether (gamecube skipped DVD).

If Blue-Ray does become the Standard for movies and thus makes it into XBOX/Wii next, then it'll all depend on what royalties Sony will charge???

$10 - $20 per Blue ray unit (in each console) would be a possibility. Any more then that and I'd say both MS and Nintendo would go their own way.

Come to think of it this way, THIS would be a MAJOR reason for MS to not want Blue-Ray to succeed. For future consoles. Hence why they are bleeding money for HD-DVD.

It's me...  no really, it IS me!!!

If Blu-Ray becomes a smashing success, Nintendo and Microsoft could easily choose HD-DVD as their format to discourage piracy...

Nintendo don't even use proper DVDs, what makes you think they would use Sonys standard Blu-rays.

I think Microsoft cares more about the VC-1 video codec than the war between HD-DVD/Blue-Ray. Home entertainment is going away from physical media to downloads, and the future is there.

So next generation console's could be more about downloadable content than physical media.

I imagine this is the last gen we'll be having 9GB DVDs, but there are many other alternatives to Blu-ray. Even if they do choose it, there are so many companies sharing the rights for the format, that that royalties will hardly fill the holes in Sony's pockets.

How many companies was it that own Blu-ray btw?

Considering IP difficulties every now and then, current download times / streaming abilities (Full quality 1080p, 7.1 audio => ~20,000 MB) and me preferring high profile games and movies stored on physical media, I surely hope not, at least not until the internet is near fully reliable and fast enough to either fully stream the data or download the movie well within an hour and if without proper streaming options also just when Terrabyte harddrives are mainstream and more reliable (my 5 year old IBM Deskstar 160GB PC harddrive, is currently being looked at if the drive can be repaired, loss of data is certain if it's not totally kaput already).

Its coming just look at Steam and the countless movie --> computer download services. Ready or not 5 year old Deskstar the future is coming.

@ elendar

I already downloaded countless games and animations from the internet during the early 90s, but like the delivery speeds have increased likewise has the supported quality thus size of the distributed content dramatically increased. Currently I have an internet connection of only 8000 kbit/s, thus only 1 MB per second max and that costs nearly 50 Euros per month, most others I know have between 1600 kbit/s and 4000kb/s connections.

IMO TV recordings through the announced TV Tuner support for the PS3 holds much potential, but IMO it's far too early to talk about full quality HDTV movie delivery over the internet with regard to mainstream consumers.
