Well considering it outsold MGS4 to become the highest selling 3rd party game on any next gen home console in Japan, I would say yes.
Not only did it sell more than MGS4 but I'd imagine the development costs of MGS4 are only a fraction MGS4's costs. So I'm sure they're more than happy with the sales on the Wii.

It's obvious Capcom made the right decision by releasing this game the console with the bigger user base and will make way more money due to lesser devolopment cost, but I really think this game would have been huge no matter if itson the Wii or PS3, it's one of the biggest franchises right now in Japan thanks to the PSP. BTW, I am getting sick of people calling this game a bomb, that's just crazy talk. |
If it sold as well on PS3 it would be selling to 1/4th of the insall base which is a HARD sell even the best selling games of all time minus the bundles can't do that... probably the only games to do this I can list are Mario Kart DD and Super Smash Bros Melee... it's honest to God that hard to achieve those sales since the whole install base =/= MH fans.

That's why MGS4 sold so little on the PS3 when comapred that massive 120 million userbase? The game wuld have sold very well, just not as well as on the Wii, i know that.

WHAT? You say that it would have also sold 1 million copies on the xbox 360, that has a 1.13 million innstall base in Japan??? |
My contention is that it would have sold quite well; perhaps not at the Wii's current numbers, but not abysmally lower either. I believe that there are enough Monster Hunter fanatics who would have purchased a 360 for the game to play it, yes. Granted, I can't prove my hunch, making it academic, and I realize why you'd be incredulous.
EA just noted that it must sell 1.1 million copies of a PS3 or X360 title to break even given that it receives $35 per sales and average costs for games are $38.5 million.
For the sake of argument, let's say Capcom has similar requirements and that Wii development is 1/3 of HD console development (as suggested by many publishers).
At 1 million already shipped, Wii has provided Capcom with $22.3 million in profit while the HD iteration at even 66% of Wii shipments (660k) would leave Capcom with $15.2 million in debt at this point.
Sure, lots of estimations and variables but even with a margin of error of a few million dollars, it's hard to imagine Capcom not being happy with Wii profits already versus what would assuredly still amount to debt along the same time frame.

Not to mention, I can't name an EA game that would have had the same development time/team size/etc. as MH3.
I think many are forgetting about the pay to play feature. MH is a lot about community and playing with friends. Japan never got as big into the pay online as other places like US with WOW and XBOX LIVE so moving from the free PSP playing to paid Wii playing likely prevented a lot of sales.

Wow 1.1 million? That's just.... stupid... no wonder there's such an advertising push for game sales on PS360/PC games... I mean it's obvious some games don't need that but if you're trying to push graphics I'm guessing those numbers are a fair estimate to how many copies need to be sold.
