Total userbase is a poor means of guessing at the potential sales of games. Also if you think total PS3 sales are going to be 23 million by the time GT5 launches you're crazy. If current rumors and leaks are true and the PS3 gets a $100 price drop within the month and GT5 launches in December, then total PS3 sales will most likely be around 28 million in which case the game would only need about a 1/3 of all PS3 owners to buy the game. However, GT5 will not reach 10 million sales instantly. It will do so over the course of about a year and a half, in which case the PS3's userbase will have increased to possibly as high as 50 million by then.

Gran Turismo 5 will have the highest rate of ownership among console owners of any Gran Turismo game.

Interesting analysis. It would all have to fall perfectly in place here for this to happen though.

Neither of you guys' analysis is correct. Yes, it was multiplatform, but you cannot say that everybody who had a 360 would've gone out, bought a PS3 and the game if it was only on the PS3, so if we were guesstimating at what the sales would be like if GTA IV was only on the PS3, it would be in between 6 and 12.8 million and still significantly under San Andreas.

It's all speculative, so you can't say your analysis is necessarily correct either.

It's more accurate than using 6 million or 12.8 million, but yes, it is analysis based on a hypothetical situation.

Exactly   I mean, 720p is a fake standard setup by TV makers.  HD is technically whatever resolutions are above the accepted 480i/480p "standard" of old.  True HD should have been 1200x800 and 1920x1200, but TV makers chose a different aspect ratio and for whatever reason decided to cut out those last 80/120 vertical lines...

i Highly highly doubt it. GT5 sales will only be marginally higher than GT5:P. The game will not outsell halo 3. GT4 sold 10.8 million on a 120M user install base and halo 3 has sold 10M on a 30+ M install base

Best selling ps3 game isn't HD (GTA IV) neither is 360's, Halo 3 Cod 4 are not HD this is not the HD generation.

GOW3 will not make any impact on sales, people who want that game will likely already have a PS3. As I already mentioned whether you like it or not Forza 3 will hamper alot of system selling power of GT5. People will ask why pay out for PS3 when I have Forza 3.

M$ have plenty left to push systems. Natal is perfectly placed in the medias eyes. Not just games media, but general news as well. M$ have every oppurtunity to make that sell alot of consoles. Not to foget that the games media has warmed heavily to Splinter Cell Conviction as the coming of christ for stealth games. On top of that Alan Wake could go either way in terms of sales. We still have the possibility of a true Banjo Kazooie 3 and true proper sequel to Perfect Dark N64. Killer Instinct would sell more systems to Nintendo lovers as that was a big game to those people.

IMO it's very safe to say Sony will be 3rd. And as I said at the beginning of the year PS3 will be more than 10mill behind 360 by Jan 2010.

um.. no.. a lot of ps2 fans bought a Wii this gen NOT a xbox 360... some ps2 people bought a 360 not all. this is the second forza on the xbox so people wanting a GT like game should have already purchased it. Forza is a clone of GT with half the fanbase  and popularity (no matter how much i love it).

look at killzone. it was a halo killer (like forza is suppose to be on GT) but did halo fans not buy thier halo game? absolutlely not. both games sold well with the proven franchise selling far more. the same will happen with GT5 and forza.

It will not hurt GT5 sales in the least bit but i also do not see GT5 hitting 14 million like GT3 unless its bundled because of past sales of sony games on ps3. they are great games but sales are good not as great as they should be.

lastly i dont think any of us sony fans will be disapointed about sales because this is a sure fire 6-7 million seller before bundles and thats the highest on ps3 so far.

I understand what your saying. I just disagree. Alot of my friends have wii. But still in my circle of friends 8 bought 360's and they all used to have PS2's. All but 2 have the wii. So alot of my friends play playstation type games on 360 this gen. And Forza 3 gives all of them a reason to not buy a PS3. There has to be more like that considering the 8 and a half million gap. Out of 8 of us that have 360's but had PS2's last gen, 5 of us had both GT3 and 4. None of us are buying GT5 thats like 70% less copies in my circle of friends.

However I believe your right with 6-7 million copies. But I think it will top out at 7 millionish. :)

It just sounds to me like you're willing to turn your back on a system due to preference. This is sad as I didn't think you were such an individual.

Not at all. If I was given a PS3 I would be very very pleased. Problem is I have a daughter and lost my job back in February for 3 months. I just dont have £300 to spend out on one. But if Forza 3 was not anywhere to be seen GT5 would have made the temptation alot more.

I actually have the chance to buy a PS3 for £200 with 5 games at the moment. And I'm seriously looking at how I can make it happen.

Ive always owned every system every gen. So it will hapen. It's just M$ made it easy to wait for PS3 this gen. All I was saying is that there will be people who will stick with 360 because Forza 3 has shown it's graphics and realism are right there next to GT series.

Why exclusives? I mean its it an even bigger compliment for a game which is on both Xbox 360 and PS3 to have an individual SKU outsell a top flight exclusive?

COD IV will probably stop @ > than 8.5M so thats obviously a contender and GTA IV will probably do more than 8 on the Xbox 360 as well.

Further to that theres always Halo: Reach which may have some Natal magic going on there, hey you never know... It could be the best light gun game in this generation aside from being one of the best shooters.

Its quite possible that GT5 won't even make the top 5 for the Xbox 360 by the end of the generation.
