I think the site is trying to broaden too much.
Don't try and make reviews a focus. Honestly, been there, done that. Every gaming site and its dog does reviews. Keep them as a nice supplement, but thousands of games have been released over the years, and even in the past few, while we've been in the 7th gen. The reviews are mostly well written, but seriously, look at the priorities. We have reviews for Dirt and Magic Ball, but not CoD4 and Oblivion? Having said that, try and get VGC on Metacritic and Gamerankings- if they click through to our site, they're sure to see all we have to offer.
The Game Database is awesome, but don't add to it so fast! Let us work on what's already there first. It doesn't look very appealing, at the moment, and it's a little bit hidden (no games option on the top bar- add that back), which is why it won't get many votes in the poll (is it an option?)
Having a news team is great, but don't pressure them. I don't think visitors get a good impression when interesting stories are hidden beneath "7 year old girl interviewed on why she likes the Wii" and "Operation Flashpoint 2 collector's edition revealed". Perhaps you could make such game specific articles only appear to people tracking the game? Of course, very few people use the "tracking" thing, because it doesn't really do anything now- this could make them use it.
Remember that this is a sales website. The news section should reflect that. Perhaps there should be a whole section for "Sales Analysis". TheSource analyses the American sales, and kind of the Japan sales, in the preview, but that's about it. I like Kowenicki's gap charts, and that's exactly what I mean. Stuff like if the Wii is having a bad week or the PS3 has a sudden boost or, in fact, when the 360 outsold the Wii in GFK, make an article about it! Explain why it could have happened and how Nintendo can stop it happening again.
As for the forums (which are an important part of the site), they're not very interesting at the moment. No big games have released recently, no big games are releasing soon, the sales are boring, and there hasn't been a press conference. It's not the holiday, so we can't predict that, either. Sometimes, it's fun to have some trolls around. I think you should be more strict with spamming (you know who I am talking about), and less strict with "trolling". I've seen people banned on this site who haven't really done anything wrong. If it's apparent that they are joking, you could clarify this with them, or just leave it. If the thread is entertaining, it doesn't need to be locked.
Make the weekly software sales more visible. It IS what the majority of people come here for. Why do you have to click to see sales for each region? Make the top five for each region and the worldwide sales visible, like before.
That's all I can think of for now. Most of it is just improving the site, but site improvements bring new members, right?
And if at all possible, try and make some ads. Nothing works as well as ads.
