Also, let me just go ahead and reiterate this right now for future posters. What I've said here is my opinion about HDTV 1080p vs 720p, and relative screen sizes and viewing distance, and not scientific evidence.
1080p is distinguishable to the human eye relative to screen size and viewing distance, but I reaffirm that I believe 1080p is nearly indistinguishable to most gamers, and at best, it is a small upgrade from 720p, and a completely overhyped resolution that is vastly overpriced.
Right now, Samsung is selling a 720p 50 inch plasma with all the bells and whistles for 800 dollars. You could also buy a 52 inch LCD at 1080p for just about 2000 dollars from the same company.
At smaller sizes, the increase in quality is questionable, and at best a marginal increase in utility considering the price effectively doubles.
I believe that size should be your first consideration when deciding between 1080p and 720p. Price second, and native resolution third. Technology just hasn't come far enough to take well enough advantage of a 1080p set at any screen size, as most digital signals come through in 1080i or 720p and in rare instances are simply upscaled.
A videophile would appreciate the 1080p resolution in rare instances, and at very close viewing ranges under certain conditions, but for the average consumer, buying a television under 50 inchs(42 or below) in 1080p is a waste of capital. Especially considering the fact that you pay the same thing for a 32" 1080p high end Sammy model that you pay for their 720p 50 inch plasma, which is undeniably a better viewing experience in my humble opinion.
Thanks for understanding.
