Forums - Sony - What's sixaxis like for driving games?

I'm no driving game fanatic, but I do like to indulge from time to time. So there is no way I'm buying a full driving set up, but I do sometimes get frustrated with the limitations of the analog stick for steering cars. So how is the sixaxis controller for driving cars? Is it close to the steering wheel, or is it barely any better (if at all) than going with the analog stick?

I had a very brief muck around with sixaxis on my cousin's PS3 with Motorstorm a year or so ago, but hardly enough to get used to the feel of the it. I just got the hang of controlling the crossbow bolt in Heavenly Sword with the sixaxis by the time my cousin had to pack up and go, it was great steering that bolt so that it went right up the enemies... .

So what's the verdict of of gamers who are greater driving fans than I?

I've only tried it in motorstorm and GTAIV... it's not too great...

4 ≈ One

Most people dont have the patience to learn (or tilt since they never tilt the controller they move at 100mph) how to properly tilt the controller..

Its a very good experience that I learned (warhawk=perfection) and killzone 2 has great moments with the sixaxis, but there arent many racers that i know of that use motion control (sadly since its the best way to use it)

i dont care for it at all but thats just me. I prefer analog sticks much more than the six axis and even more than a driving setup. (honestly i would go drive a real car if i wanted to use a steering wheel and pedals) but thats just me

Long Live SHIO!

It works great for driving flower petals!

This is true. Flower has the best use of the feature I've seen yet.

Oh, I thought it would be a feature on most driving games. Perhaps not, because most driving games are multiplat atm, apart from Motorstorm. I wonder if it will be a feature in GT5 then? I tend to get sweaty thumbs playing driving games with the analog stick, so at key moments the old thumb slips and I crash out.

For cars, it is almost impossible. I've tried it in MotorStorm and WipEout HD, and I just cannot use it. You keep madly swinging your hands around, it's nowhere near precise enough.

I prefer analog.

It works really well in Flower, though.

Would it be because the motion is over sensitive, or not sensitive enough that it isn't so good for driving?

I remember playing a demo of Motorstorm at Target when it first game out... I was doing fairly well just using the standard controls, until one of the electronics reps who thought he knew it all decided to come over and tell me to switch to the motion controls because they were so much better, according to him anyway.

So after a couple minutes the guy just wouldn't get off my case about it, not to mention the fact that since I had been playing for about a good 4-5 minutes, a small crowd of people formed and were standing around me checking out the game. So to shut him up I went into the options menu, switched to the motion controls, and right after I got back into the game, I proceeded to drive myself right off a cliff after being near the front of the pack the entire race.

The people watching got a good chuckle, and I just paused and walked away from the kiosk to let some other poor sucker try their luck at the motion controls... sure enough, next person did the exact same thing lol. So yea, sixaxis isn't very good for racing games in my book. Not a big fan of using the Wii remote by itself either, but for games like Mario Kart and Excitetruck it works very well so I have no complaints about it.
