Forums - Sales - Activision trying to find out how fast they can kill Guitar Hero franchise?

What are the 5 GH games this year? I'm proud to say I never bought one.

Are you counting band hero and dj hero? I think those should be counted too...

For 2009 I counted Smash Hits, GH 5, Metallica, Van Halen and Band Hero, so I missed DJ hero.

EDIT - fixed.

Then you missed Guitar Hero: On Tour Modern Hits

Oh I was being nice so I only counted console titles (I mentioned it in the OP). Altogether there are 8 games in 2009 (including one arcade game).

Number of console Guitar Hero games per year:

2005 - 1 game

2006 - 1 game

2007 - 2 games

2008 - 2 games

2009 - 5 games

Why so many GH games in 2009? How long can they continue milking the franchise before people start getting desensitized to the Guitar Hero name?

I'm also wondering how many GH games we'll see next year...

I think your missing the point. There are people who don't buy Guitar Hero because of the lack of music selection of their taste. I don't like Beastie Boys and find those songs horrible. I would not buy Metelica, but I would by David Bowie. The mistake your making is that the varients off the main line is for GH players, but it's not. The other varients are for GH players than don't play because they don't like the song list.

Milking a franchise is under the idea that your intend to sell the new product to the same core base. Since this is not the case and it's meant to expand the player base by offering more appealing tracks to others. It's not milking, but haven't I replied to you on this before? Even if it wasn't you the fact that this subject comes up often enough shows more a self centered mentality. Since a non self centered mentality would appreciate that Activision is trying to bring the joy of there GH games to a bigger audience.

I understand that, but the main series games have all kinds of music, and the band-specific games are of bands which are quite guitar-oriented. What's more, they're now doing more than one title in the main series this year (one of which is a mish-mash of previous games), that hardly seems like expanding the userbase.

@ .jayderyu )

exactly

and I'd like to add, that GH has to broaden it's audience way faster than before, because now there is direct competion, which could (and does) serve specific interests before they have the chance to (and that's what they have to prevent)

We are gonna molest these series to the ground XD

I've only got guitar hero 2, and I don't intend to buy anymore.

Yes, they are killing the Guitar Hero brand perhaps, in a way.

But on the other hand, as some have pointed out in this thread, music taste between people varies hugely in this age, so you really need to release games for each sub genre to please most people.

Like myself, I love heavy metal but none of the GH and Rokband song lineups so far have pleased me at all - until GH Metallica.

Whether the trend will continue to be more games, or just games that allow access to more songs down the road, it's pretty clear that eventually, if you can hear it on the radio or download it from itunes, you'll be able to play it in a video game too. It'll be interesting to see which franchise is the first to completely break down the barriers and develop the recording tools to let just about any band release their music to videogame format for a fee.

Just imagine your local garage band scrounging together the money to get their music "hero/band" ified so that it can be played by a few hundred fans in the nearby area. This is the future. Oh yes it is.
