Whether the trend will continue to be more games, or just games that allow access to more songs down the road, it's pretty clear that eventually, if you can hear it on the radio or download it from itunes, you'll be able to play it in a video game too. It'll be interesting to see which franchise is the first to completely break down the barriers and develop the recording tools to let just about any band release their music to videogame format for a fee.

Just imagine your local garage band scrounging together the money to get their music "hero/band" ified so that it can be played by a few hundred fans in the nearby area. This is the future. Oh yes it is.
