Wii sales are slowing because its September, people are holding off until christmas at this point

Plus school's back in session- that often diverts consumer dollars for a bit. Anyway... Burst? God no! Settling down to "reasonable" numbers (defining reasonable as "still well above what anyone dreamed in 2006")? Maybe. Halo3 and the holidays are gonna toss it all about for a bit, so we won't really be able to tell until January/February. That said, what's the basis for this? Nintendo only outselling the competition in Japan by a large margin instead of a rediculous one? ALMOST being tied by the 360 in MS's best market, on the eve of the launch of it's biggest title? That it's actually in stock on some continents? If these are problems, sign me up for more. As to Wii being a fad? Wasn't Pokemon? Not all fads die. Besides, the Wii has advantages over stuff like Beanie Babies- each new game has the chance to reinvigorate the console. We know Mario, Mario Kart and SSBB will bring in the tradotional gamers, and WiiFit will broaden the base, especially among broads. And can you imagine what will happen when WiiDogs comes out next year? (you know it's coming) And whenever things look to be slowing down, Nintendo can cut the price more aggressively than either competitor.

Fad: Short lived fashion are called fad’s; They seldom have any lasting Impact on future fashion. They are briefly and suddenly seen everywhere and just as suddenly they vanish.

Pokemon doesn't seem short-lived. And you know they said video games were a fad.

Give me 5 logical reasons why the Wii is a fad. Why people are buying it. And why people will stop.

I'm gonna say the bubble IS about to burst, but in a different way.

What's been releasing for the Wii has been mostly mediocre. There's been the fair share of great games, but there's been a lot of dull stuff, too. And still fewer really high-quality games than what you see for other systems.

The bubble is about to burst... and developers will suddenly be releasing a plethora of games. I see it as the bubble containing the Wii's potential, and when it bursts, the Wii will explode with a surge of new life.

Rather than dying off, I expect it to suddenly begin soaring higher than ever.

@dtewi

People still say video games are a fad, and its the best way to make money now a days. Not only that, but its the most selling section in the electronics market.

1) It's a fad because it's not 360. 2) It's a fad because it's not PS3. 3) It's a fad because normal people can't possibly like playing fun games. 4) People buy it because it's a fad. 5) People will stop buying it because it's only a fad. ;)

I've been on the inside track of several fads in the past and I can honestly say that people who use 'fad' as a negative thing for the Wii (implying that it will suddenly stop selling) really don't understand what a fad is or how it works.

Generally speaking, all fads which are centered around teens and adults are basically the wide spread adoption of an item or activity by the general public that had previously only been enjoyed by a sub-cuture. Even though the general public's adoration and attention on a fad seems short lived (typically 24 to 48 months) the popularity of the item or activity tends to extend for a long period in time in both directions; even after the fad has died down (and it is no longer the in thing) it generally remains somewhat popular.

Basically, a fad has several stages of progression

  1. Core Subculture ('core gamers')
  2. General Subculture ('gamers') and trendy early adopters
  3. Connected subcultures ('Casual Gamers')
  4. General Public
  5. Late Adopters

If the Wii is a fad you would expect that it would be in stage 1 and (possibly) moving into stage 2 at the moment, most of 2008 would be in stage 3, 2009 and 2010 would be stage 4 and then 2011 and 2012 would be stage 5 ...

Wii Fit should sell well but I'm wondering if people may be putting too many expectations into it expanding the Wii audience.

For starters some of the feedback from people who've tried it is that the Yoga and the other fitness parts seem like a chore (not fun) but the game aspects of it are fun. That means that it's unlikely that Good Morning America or Oprah or all the other shows and popular media that played up Wii Sports are likely going to be playing up the fitness parts of Wii Fit if it's not fun.

Also it's highly unlikely that Yoga and the other exercise parts of Wii Fitness will lend themselves well to being party games, so that leaves games like "hitting oncoming soccer balls" at parties attracting basically the same audience that bought Wii Play. It would have to do more to attract new customers since the price of admission for Wii Fitness is the Wii + Balance Board + Wii Fit taking it beyond the mass market price point that casuals love so much . It seems hard for me to believe that dodging a ball or using a hula hoop will be enough to make non-Wii owners run out to spend that much money (at least in significantly large numbers).

People are also playing up the health benefits of it but what happens if it fails to deliver? Actually I should say when because I go to a gym and I know getting into shape is far more than simply stepping onto a balance board or doing "core motions" as Nintendo is calling it. So the health angle will quickly evaporate in the span of a few months at most (in my opinion). I mean why would someone use it rather than a treadmill in which they can watch their favorite tv show while getting into shape?

Anyways those are some of my opinions about Wii Fit...  Of course I could be completely wrong, I never dreamed Wii Sports would become as big as it is and sell consoles as fast as it did.

yeah, but the wii still has two more massive games and a lot of big ones too. You never know.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but overall shipments of Wii's have most likely been lowered to allocate systems for this holiday season.  Remember Reggie making a statement saying that Wii availability this Christmas would be unprecedented.  It makes more sense to have many more systems available during the holidays because every freaking kid is going to want a Wii and parents will be more willing to shell out the money since it is a Christmas present.  I've had a Wii from day 1 and it has totally lost any play value for me.  Before Metroid it sat dormant for a good 4 months.  I have been thinking about trading it in but I really don't feel like getting ass raped by Gamestop.
