Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Yellow Light Of Death Hits

It's not just the 60GB ones that crap out, two years ago (a little over a year after launch) everyone got a 40GB PS3 as their Christmas bonus and there are more than 10 of us that have had their PS3's crap out with the yellow light (so it's about a 1/7-1/8 fail rate for us).

Yeah, my anecdotal evidence is about as reliable as the internet, just saying I'm not sure how much the PS3 model has to do with it.

I sold my 40Gig the next day because I already had an 80Gig with full BC (the 40's didn't have any) and mine is still working fine, I just know I'll be beyond angry if mine breaks.  I can handle however long it would take to get fixed without my PS3 games since I have the other two consoles to tide me over, it's missing the BluRay player that would destroy me.

my launch PS3 isn't in good condition either

it doesn't have the YLOD, but it freezes (often with green artifacts) after 30minutes-2hours of playtime on any game or disc

I guess in my case the RSX overheats. I've opened it once (the PS3 is out of waranty, obviously), but to get to the processors/heatsinks/fan seems to be very tricky, so I might be better off just selling it like this.

I have a 60gb PS3 and have not got the YLOD either but when going on the internet and playing KZ2 online it started freezing.  So I went on youtude to watch how to open the PS3 so I can clean it better and replace somethings.  It stop freezing now.

Both the 360 and PS3 are known to go wrong, it's just one of those things but i do think Sony should cover any costs for repairing a ps3 within the 12 months, I thought this was the law?

In the US, it is a 1 year warranty. In other countries, who knows but I have heard of 2 year warranties. The system has been out for more than 1 year, so more than enough people have systems outside of warranty. I really hope my unit breaks within warranty, or not at all.

Sadly, my Wii sounds like it is going to break, but hasn't. Hopefully it doesn't, as it is no longer in warranty.

We have a 2 year warrenty here.

These kind of threads makes me nervous though..

*goes over to blow some air at the ps3 in hope it miraculously uncovers all the dust it's gathered over time*

Check out my game about moles ^

My friend kept teasing me, telling me my 360 Elite (bought in August 07) would crap out, just recently his PS3 broke down!!! I don't think he wanted to tell me though ..

Which model of PS3 usually the YLOD hits? The older or the new ones?

Launch 60GB.

Oh I see. So does this mean the new ones are still safe (80GB)?

Safe?  No hardware is safe from failure

I am clearly talking about the YLOD. I know that all hardwares will eventually break.

Wait  another year or so and ask that question again.  the 40gb/80gb has not been out as long as the 60gb

I  don;t appeciate the attitude

Well you started it. I also don't appreciate your attitude.

I am worried that's why I am asking. Instead of answering the question you answered me sarcastically.

My answer was not sarcastic you just took it that way

I am asking a serious question and clearly asking if the 80GB and new is affected by the YLOD. Then you answered me with what?

"Safe? No hardware is safe from failure". I don't care if you are being sarcastic, joking or trying to lecture me. I am expecting a serious and nice answer from the posters here.

Whatever man, I am done arguing with you. I won't reply again and someone already answered my question.

Thanks Leonidus.

Sometimes I'm glad I didn't get a 60gb launch PS3 - although I do think its irresponsible of Sony to not listen to the consumers of their products and treat PS3 failures like Microsoft treat 360 ones. A mate of mine recently got the YLOD and hes now having to may sony to fix it - kinda ridiculous

It's ok RROD isn't gone yet either. I've heard reports of RE5 bundled elites getting the red ring.

But no machine is indestructible anyway. What can you do?

Would you mind linking these reports?

I'm guessing by "reports" he means "someone on X forum said they got a RRoD."  It's not that I don't believe him or the person saying it, but:

  1. it's anecdotal so it doesn't mean every RE5 edition will RRoD
  2. Any piece of electronic equipment can and will break eventually.

All electronic devices will have failure rates. This is not threadworthy. RROD only got so much publicity because it was far beyond the industry standard for allowable failures.

My 360 Red ringed twice. Got it fixed once for free, then I bought a Jasper model for $300 (with a bigger hard drive, and two free games).  Sold my old one for $95.

My cousin's PS3 died once, and it cost him $150 and all of his game saves.

I don't think either of us feel like winners, here.
