To put this into context he is saying that Sony will win this generation after it is over. How fucking pathetic is that to win after the contest is decided. After the competition has retired their old machines, and replaced them with newer models that are ten times more powerful then your machine. Which your not going to have the decency to put out of its misery.

Why do people KEEP saying this?   Console generations 'competitions' keep going AS LONG AS THE PRODUCTS REMAIN SOLD.  I mean why wouldn't they?   We don't discount the 360's first year because it was before Wii and PS3.  If Sony were to somehow pull a magical rabbit out of their ass and outsell the Wii by 2012/2014.....They have won the generation.

According to Sony the generation didn't start till they joined it

Although, your point only works if all current gen systems are still being sold alongside the PS3 during that time frame.  What we are all saying is that within 5 years, the Wii and 360 will likely be discontinued so there really isn't any merit in "winning" if the PS3 reaches higher lifetime sales after that point.

So Last generation still has not ended then?  Interesting.  In terms of profits for the company, sure no big deal, but the "gen" is over.  It ends the day all the new consoles for the next gen are released.

I would say the last generation is over when all of the players for the following generation (Lets just say : Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft)  have ALL released new consoles.  Not when one company stops making them or makes a new console as some people have suggested.

Well people just like to assume that next generation will somehow have to play out the same way this generation has.  With Sony releasing third and Nintendo and Microsoft beating them to the punch.  People seem to believe that Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo will be jumping the gun to release a new console.  I tend to view this totally differently.   I think this might be one of the longest generationswe've seen in awhile.

It counts for money to the company, but it does not count as "winning" the generation since that has long ended.

As is the case with these types of sales.  Eventually the PS3/360/Wii won't be nearly as popular as they are now and will eventually dwindle down to lower amounts of sales.  The primary reason these companies release new consoles and new systems is for this reason.  If Sony made a system that was viable on the market for 14 years and Nintendo and Microsoft made a system that was viable for only 11 years.  Sony still could feasibly win the 'generation' as they managed to capture audiences for a longer lifespan.

I don't think you can win if the race is already over.  That's like saying that you ran a race with two other people, and they both finished 3 minutes ahead of you, but you finished the race and took an extra 10 meter jog so you win?  Doesn't work that way.  They get more sales, and more profits after the generation is over, but the gen ends when the new consoles are released and you can't count it as "winning" the gen anymore.

That's not what this is though.  What you're trying to say is :  Three racers lineup and decide to hold a race for an indefinite amount of time that only the people in the stands can determine based upon their support of each racer.   If you the people in the stands stop supporting a specific racer,  that doesn't mean the race ends that just means, that specific racer is no longer apart of the race.

You don't get to start a new generation whenever you want. The market determines this.  If the Sony PS3 can still be viable 5 years from now on the market and surpass the Nintendo Wii?  They certainly can claim they won the generation.   I have my doubts that they could actually do this but that appears to be another discussion.

The only 'factor' in having sales is the gross number of sales/profits....Much like the race example the only 'factor' in having a race is continuing onward to the finish line,  So why would either end prior to these stopping.

Yeah if Sony never releases another console for the next 17 years, I'll give them this generations "win", but that is never going to happen.

I'm not saying that is going to happen.  My point is,  is that with a $600 dollar initial price tag  and tons of potential price drops to go through and millions upon millions of current PS2 owners (Still waiting to take that plunge),  the PS3 certainly could be revitalized (Especially with Blu-Ray adoption rapidly on the rise) at least to the consumers.   If something like this happens?  Sony certainly could claim winning this generation. As the design of their product was meant to be as future-proof as humanly possible.

Generations are not some definitive thing here.  The only reason we have them is to make comparisons easier for us. The only reason a generation 'Ends' is because of the consumers on the market.  They ultimately tell the producers when it's time for a new generation.

If the market leans heavily towards Sony at some point and they see a significant boost of sales? Eventually passing Microsoft and Nintendo? They can claim victory.

I take it this means the fabled year(s) of the PS3 will in fact be 2012-14?

as nightsurge[i think that was the poster, i kind of got lost with all the different colored ink] said a few posts above me, i think this gen will last a bit longer. considering the fact that 2 of the consoles are HD[thus costing more to produce and longer to make the profit they want] and the other is selling like hotcakes, i think this gen will be pretty long. also throw in the fact that were in a recession right now, and taking risks[such as heavily researching new technology for a new console] are going to be less common than at a normal time, this generation will be prolonged for sure. this means that his prediction of 3 years til the ps3 dominates isnt a totally bad thing..

why do people give Sony so much grief when they are simply doing what they do best.

What will it matter if the other two consoles drop out with their newer models in 3-5 years? It only means that the PS3 can survive this gen as well as going into next gen. At the moment the PS3 is the most powerful gaming console to date. By the time the next Wii and xbox come out they will have more comparable, if not better hardware. This will put the PS3 at a technological disadvantage but a userbase advantage over the competition. Does this not sound familiar to any of you? PS2 vs Gamecube and XBOX much? THe PS3 will have a lower price tag then both next gen consoles and still be comparable, enough for people to start picking it up like the PS2 or Wii.

Sounds like the perfect plan to me. Create a system that can survive two console gens by making it BEFORE it's time. This will assure their 10 year plan as well as keep them profitable.

Great post. I agree 100%

Thx! At least one other person has some rationality in this thread. ^_^

And I also believe that when the next gen consoles release in the next few years the PS3 might still have a very strong edge on them. If you remember, Sony has sealed off one of the cell processors in the system, that no one knows what it is even for. I am thinking this is a fail safe, to assure their system is not TOO FAR behind the next set. The current gen console makers can barely handle the amount of cells they have access too. They must of thought it best to wait it out to unleash that one.

BluRay and the Cell will keep Playstation ahead.

This was by far the saddest sequence of posts the J mans ever laid his eyes on.

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!

Sony fans in this thread seem to fail to realise the Ps3 is NOT the Ps2. Ps2 destroyed the competition, whilst the Ps3 is in a distant 3rd. place. They could sell the Ps3 for another 10 years after the Wii has finished selling and there's still no guarantee it will catch up the 30m+ deficit it will have on the Wii. This is just Sony PR spin bullshit at its finest and so many of you eternal optimists have fallen for it!

DON'T WIN ME CHIBI BUDDY DON'T WIN ME.

ANIMAL CROSSING NEW LEAF FRIEND CODE:- 5129 1175 1029. MESSAGE ME.
ANDY MURRAY:- GRAND SLAM WINNER!

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

No really, the PS3 is very likely going to be in last place when the first next gen console is released.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Sony lost the Chest match before it ever began. The infamous 600 dollar price tag ruined them from the get go.

@Rpruett
So basically there is no "generations," because you gave like 4 different reasons why/how they advance and still then basically made the claim that they don't really exist.

I guess what Sony is saying then means nothing, as they shall win nothing and dominate in something that doesn't exist.

is this guy stupid? even is a console is still been sold by sony there will be no one publishing games on it because the new gen had started by then, and people will be buying wii2 and 720

Take a look at PS2. Then GTFO.

And look at the Gamecube.  Saying you have a 10 year plan on matters if your console is the top dog when the next generation starts.  This is NOT true fort the PS3.
