Yes. The PS2 had online. So did the Gamecube and the Xbox.
Nintendo can make amazing games and amazing consoles. Just cause the Cube underperformed and the Wii is a void of horrible games, does not mean Nintendo can't make a good console.
I think Nintendo makes great consoles. At least you can always count on great build quality.

Quote for truth! The only reason my Nes isn't working is because I took it completely apart. My mom still plays my Snes, and my little sis still plays my N64. The only Nintendo console that ever broke on me was my Gamecube, and it still worked if I tinkered with it long enough.
My PS1's, PS2's, and 360's can't make the same claim.

Well the GC didn't really have online play, right? Are you sure the PS2 was fleshed out and worked like the Dreamcast? I've heard the argument before that the Dreamcast was so amazing because of it's online which was way before its time and that the PS2 didn't have it.

The GC had Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1 and 2. There were very few other games that had online play.

The only Gamecube game I know of with official online is Phantasy Star Online Card Battle.
I played SSX3 online, and I know tons and tons of people who played Socom on the PS2. I used to give my Action Replay to my co-worker so he could update the info at the official site.
Xbox had Xbox live, of course.
I tried to take my Dreamcast online. It definitely wasn't like Xbox Live, or anything. All I could get to work was the web browser. The only online game I bought was Quake 3, and since I never subscribed to Sega's online, I never played it online.
Curses! The only example I could come up with after 5 minutes of thinking (PS2 no interwebz) was debunked!
What a cruel world!
I shall have my revenge!

Remember that one of the main reasons Nintendo differentiates themselves from other console and handheld makers is the machine itself.
Are you saying that the DS was a mistake? That it didn't/shouldn't have strayed from conformity. This is half the reason why the Gamecube was considered less than the former consoles, it didn't innovate in terms of controller and system design enough.
I don't care that a system they make is difficult to adjust to (3rd parties eventually get used to it) because this is why theyre successful. They know this and this is why the Wii is a natural extension from the DS, N64, Snes, etc.
Other companies forget what Nintendo is doing when they redesign a controller or interaction asthetic of their machine, theyre not making it more difficult for the player but more interesting. This is why the Playstation is a failure in my eyes, 3 gens and basically no changes in terms of interaction, it gets boring.
“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
Nintendo consoles have always been designed with their own software in mind, that's what i love about Nintendo as a console manufacturer. Also without Nintendo the controllers of today would look VERY different..
Nintendo brought the D-Pad, Shoulder buttons, analog stick, force feedback and now IR pointing, soon to be 1:1 motion control, split controller and an inbuilt speaker and inbuilt memory to the table. I think their greatest hardware achievements can be seen in their controllers.
