Pokemon is a far far bigger property then final fantasy.

My proof?

Well the sales are far larger. But not only that, the pokemon movies are far more successful then the final fantasy movies. Hell the first final fantasy was a flop.

Take a look at the box office taking for the first pokemon movie

Domestic: $85,744,662 52.4%
+ Foreign: $77,900,000 47.6%
= Worldwide: $163,644,662

Then compare it to final fantasy the spirt within

Domestic: $32,131,830 37.7%
+ Foreign: $53,000,000 62.3%
= Worldwide: $85,131,830

Clearly pokemon is also more popular with the general populace aswell.

   Comparing movies to define which game series is more popular is certainly a good idea.

   Anyway, dunno which property is "bigger". But Final Fantasy is far far more popular than Pokemon on consoles. Pokemon is only more popular on handhelds, just like Monster Hunter.

If by THE BIGGEST you mean "The biggest JRPG franchise", wrong, Pokemon is the biggest.

If by THE BIGGEST you mean "The biggest franchise overall", wrong, Mario is the biggest.

..and thats why japan has ordinances forbidding the release of a dragon quest game on any day but a week day.

Dragon Quest III (my favorite DQ game BTW) was the one that caused this, and it was not the government of Japan that did this, Enix themselves decided to hold off the release of future Dragon Quest games until weekends. The thing is, government or not, it's done because mass absenteeism from schools and places of work, and that happened because Dragon Quest until now has been always the most popular console JRPG, you need to be at home or any place with a TV, the console and the game, and those things are not present at work or school... you don't need those ordinances with a Pokemon game because it's a handheld game, you can buy the game and begin to play it anywhere you want because it's a portable JRPG...

Interesting, and that's what I said - Final Fantasy is bigger! More people bought it, it was more hyped. Just crazy. That's why I think Final Fantasy will win...

I was talking about the first week - this is the significant part. In the end, Dragon Quest may win, but that's just all casuals that want to test the game. But regarding crazy hype and launch, Final Fantasy is bigger and a more famous name in Japan, in my opinion.

 

Now you say Dragon Quest is the "casual" series. LOL  I think that description belongs to Final Fantasy MUCH MUCH MUCH more than dragon quest.

 

I'd say that is true, yes. Final Fantasy is not, because it sells very well in a week. Very well.
