I can comfortably assume they are making some money on the premium SKU. Probably losing some money on the base SKU, or just about breaking even now.

That's because it's their last quarter and we'll get their whole FY losses and stuff. Nintendo hasn't posted theirs either for the same reason, except replace "losses" with "gains", when is Nintendo posting theirs anyways? Anyone know?

In their last financial Q&A they said they would start breaking even towards the end of the fiscal year (March 2010).

That was assuming the previous exchange rates, since then they've gone a bit in favor of Sony so I guess it could even happen before the holiday period. That's why I still think price cuts aren't likely to happen this year.

So a pricecut will be one step back in terms of trying to earn money but on the other hand.......if they don't the gap will increase each week.

Hard times. A miracle is required for a 100 dollar cut this year, wonder waht changes they have to do to slash costs.

 

how about sony cutting price when thier manufacturing costs drop? 45mm chipset is coming this year

Here is what Sony said to investors:

Q: My second question is related to Playstation number 3, the profitability is increasing, and when are you going to be seeing profit in the field of hardware?


A: If we base our projections on the present exchange rate to continue and if introduction of the 45 nm chips is fulfilled (it is being used in manufacturing already), but in view of that by latter half of next year, sometime there, I believe that we can see the improved margin and start to see profit.

Q: Point of confirmation, when you say later next year, is it later the second half of the calendar year 2009, or the fiscal year 2009?

A: Fiscal year 2009, that's March 2010.

I was reading what Harai said last year, when he said that the PS3 will most likely be profitible around this time this year. He said around March 2009. End of the the 2008 fiscal year, not the 2009 fiscal year.

Yes I know this was said before the economic downfall but they should still be pretty close by now. I can't see that still being a year away.
