Forums - Sales - Japan Charts Week 16 (04/13/09 - 04/19/09)

At the same time price drop of ps3 might completly turn the picture or if by some miracle Sony releases GT 5 before christmas.

Or it might happen that motion plus turns out to be not so much of hardware mover (I don't really understand why someone who doesn't have wii already would be excited for it to the point of buying console)

outlaw - I don't think the PS3 beating the Wii will excite the market. Only fanboys.

Both consoles have sold so pitifully poor this year, and Japanese hardware sales for consoles is so nonexistant, it's like being the winner of the undercard in a prize fight.

The PS3 has sold ~400,000 units this year and beaten the Wii's YTD sales. Whoop-de-friggin-do. Way to compete in a market that is becoming irrelevant. Oh, and the PS3 has a ~5 million unit hardware deficit. So this is kind of irrelevant from a long-term standpoint.

That's not to say it isn't interesting to myself and others, because it is. But from a higher standpoint, this is nearly irrelevant.

It's interesting to market/sales enthuisists. Which are most of us here.

Something that usually doesn't happen should excite everyone.

For consoles the UK is probably bigger than Japan now.

From BKK's post here

Wii + PS3 + 360 in the UK = 10m

Wii + PS3 + 360 in Japan = 12m

Remember that Japan has twice the population of the UK, and that PS3 and Wii both launched a bit later in the UK, and cost more than in Japan

Thats very interesting.. the japan console market has shrunk drasticly, Im hoping someone (one of the big 3) really starts to get serious in that market, because I fear for japan developers.

WOW just wow

now PS3 passing the wii's YTD to in JAPAN isn't "exciting"

so was it only exciting the weeks xbox 360 outsold PSWii?

I figure this will turn into a PSP vs DS in 2008 situation even if PS3 outsells Wii most of the year. The spikes from Motion plus, Monster Hunter G and 3, and whatever else is coming should be enough to keep Wii ahead even if PS3 outsold Wii 4, 6, 8 months of the year

But what about when Final Fantasy XIII is release and Gran Turismo? (FFXIII should be released in 2009, possibly Gran Turismo 5)

Those two games alone should easily be keeping the PS3 sold ahead of the Wii for a good while.

Edit: Not to mention there's a good chance there could be a price cut

Well Wii is due for a price cut in Japan too.

I have to look this up, but I don't think a a console (not a portable) has ever gone as long as Wii has without a price cut. PS2 may have been close, I have to check but a 2.5-3 year run at the original price is pretty amazing for this industry

So what happened to the Pokemon sales? I thought it was predicted at 250k? Terrible week#1 sales IMO!

re:PS3 sales - the demo has just pulled in a good chunk of the FFXIII hardware boost early. When the game *does* launch, you'll see a lot less hardware impact than it would have done otherwise. Still - all very nice for Sony, lets see if they can keep the momentum going!

Well for Pokemon I multiplied by the wrong extrapolator essentially.

For the FFXIII demo its because it sold very well at video stores which can carry greater inventory then small Japanese game stores.

@shams

this demo "boost" came but FF9 gave PS1 a boost from 10K to 100K

so you see FF13 ACTUAL wills till give PS3 is HUMUNGOUS BOOST!
