Forums - Nintendo - Sony: "DSi ignores significant gamer groups, is only for kids"

Zeethr said:
i wouldn't argue that maybe nintendo's DS demographic is children. software says it all and backs up this theory. so many sales are probably based on brothers and sisters not wanting to share their DS with their siblings. DSi is probably still going to be real fun though. cant knock it.

How do you explain the sales of the two Brain Age games, Vision Training, Professor Layton, Common Sense Training, Personal Trainer: Cooking, etc.?

I'd love to know...

Oh boy what is a good word to describe people who never learn? Idiots? Mental? Delusional?

I would have thought that given the results of DS v PSP and Wii v PS3 Sony would have taken enough humble pie and just shut up about Nintendo rather than continuing to make themselves look stupid. This is quite similar to what they said before the release of DS.

DS v PSP and Wii v PS3 doesn't have to be about sales. PS3 and PSP are both much more powerfull than DS and Wii, have better graphics, multimedia, better online, more features...

True, but what good is that when the DS has a much bigger amount of quality games than the PSP? 3rd party support between Wii & PS3 MIGHT be debatable in that they don't have really much to offer in terms of good 3rd party exclusives. I know about the Wii having tons of shovelware, but a lot of that shovelware originally came from PS2.

PSP ia about to get lots of great exclusives, like Little Big Planet, Motorstorm, Resistance, Patapon 2... Sony admited they didnt focused on PSP lately.

And PS3 got Resistance FOM, Resistance 2, MGS and Yakuza 3 as good 3d party exclusives.

I dont know why is everybody comparing sales here. Sony never said anything about DS sales. Yes, we all know DS already have those games, but we all know PSP version will look at least 10 times better.

bWe're comparing sales because:

1). This is VGChartz

2). "Good games depend entirely upon personal preference. What might be a good game to you might not be a good game to me, and vice versa. In such a subjective realm, only financial success can be a truly objective measure of who is better." - Mr. Storm, a poster at Kotaku

3). We know you don't want to use sales as a metric for success only because Sony is losing!

1. This isn't Sales Discussion

2.LOL of the week. God Of War and Madworld are both GREAT games, but they didn't sold very well.Does that means Wii sports in better than those 2 games? NO! And i have no use of financial success of one company unless i work for them.

3. Yea, just like you don't wanna use an actual console/hardware as metric for success because Nintendo is losing

1. But it is.  Hence Sony's bitterness.

2. That's not what I'm saying all.  I like MadWorld much better than Wii Sports.  But an unbundled Wii Sports sold way more than MadWorld ever will.  Therefore, it's safe to say that more people are interested in paying for and playing Wii Sports than MadWorld.

3.  Using hardware as a metric, the PS3 is far more powerful than the Wii.  The PSP is more powerful than the DS.  It's a fact, everyone knows this - but no one cares!  More people want the weaker Wii and DS than the all-mighty PS3 and PSP - and we know this because the SALES say so!

Wii sports is selling better than Madworld because it has the word ''Wii'' in its name, so uninformed people know what that is and will probably buy it, but those people don't know what Madworld is.

And the research in Japan have shown that Japanese gamers are more satisfied with the Sony consoles than with Nintendo consoles. so people DO care about graphics and hardware. But lots of Ds/Wii owners are seniors who don't even know what ''graphics'' means, so they just buy the system who has less hardcore games and more kiddie and casual games and kids who probably want PS3 or PSP but daddy says no because of the high price. One guy wanted to trade his DS for my PSP in my school.

And like i said before: I would rather have system with more features and better graphics than system which is selling good.

In the same survey, Japanese gamers are most satisfied with Xbox 360. So 360 must have better graphics and more powerful than PS3.

That's a great example!

LOL

Japanese gamers are more satisfied with PSP than with the PS3 and Wii. So if we follow your logic, PSP have better graphics and more powerful than PS3 and Wii.

I ONLY said people CARE ABOUT HARDWARE that's why people in Japan are more satisfied with HD consoles, than with Nintendo consoles. I never said the most powerful system is the most satisfying system in Japan i only said people DO care about graphics and that's why they are more satified with HD consoles

@BladeOfGod: Ohh... You are giving me a headache. And this isn't even the first time.

And why do you think people think Wii is a name worth buying? It has something to do with what Wii stands for. The name value doesn't come out from nowhere. Since Wii wasn't an existing brand, it has formed its brand with its software.

And how long do you think Sony can keep going if they keep posting losses? The reason Sony keeps supporting its gaming ventures is because it believes it still can make money in the business.
Considering Nintendo has put out DSi, some DS software, is currently working on a number of games, i really don't see your point.

Well, anybody who know what wii is probably knows what wii sports is. I guess you live in Europe, so when you walk in to GameStop, and when you see Wii box i bet you also see Wii sports there.

''And how long do you think Sony can keep going if they keep posting losses?''

Well, first i dont think Sony is gonna keep posting losses and they already have 2 good games for 2010 ( GT 5 GOW 3 ) and 3 good games for 2009 (Heavy Rain, Infamous and uncharted 2) , so i would say AT LEAST 2 more years

Oh and there is also E3 2009.

If Nintendo is really committed to reaching a broader, more diverse audience of gamers beyond the “kids” market that they’ve always engaged, there isn’t much new with the DSi to support that. Significant gamer demographic groups are being ignored, and there continues to be limited opportunities for games from external publishers to do well on the DSi. Compare that with the PSP platform, where we have many blockbuster franchises from our publishing partners launching this year, representing a wide variety of genres and targeting diverse demographics. Games such as Rock Band Unplugged from MTV Games, Assassin’s Creed from Ubisoft, Dissidia Final Fantasy from Square Enix, and Hannah Montana from Disney demonstrate the commitment that publishers have to the PSP. From our own first-party studios, we’re launching unique versions of LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm, and we’re also planning a steady stream of downloadable games — both new titles and PSone classics — to add to the content that PSP owners can already purchase wirelessly through PlayStation Store.

UUhmmm What??

He is right, I've been browsing through the DS library and it has very very few games that appeal to me as an adult.  The games are nearly all exclusively for kids.  Not many aren't.

Looking at your game library you don't like adult game, just juvenile one, don't confuse the M rating with being for adult, those are mostly played by male kids and teenagers.

As for if the DS miss those, in term of percentage of the game library or maybe even in pure number, it's well behing the PSP but if you are not the kind of persons who buy 10+ games every years they are still plenty enough. If you are in the small subset that buy an enormous amount of games from this particular genre exclusivly then, yes you are better off with something else, not sure if the PSP got enough games though, even in this overly represented genre on the platform since third party support is abysimal. Better off with a 360 or PS3.

@BladeOfGod: It's rather irrelevant whether how long do you think Sony keeps posting losses, the question is, how long Sony will stay in the industry if all they do is post losses? No, they won't stay for two years. If they see only losses in the future, they exit the market ASAP.
The games they are putting out is completely irrelevant in this matter.

Now wait, you are only making a circle with your claims. When you say Wii Sports is selling because of the name Wii in it, you are claiming that Wii is a brand that established itself before Wii Sports. The claim isn't logical, since Wii Sports is maybe the biggest single factor in building the Wii brand. If your claim had been that Wii is selling because of Wii Sports, you'd have made some kind of logical statement.

You didn't comment the relation of userbase and customer satisfaction.

I think Sony wont be posting any losses for a long time now and they are pretty big company so they will stay in video game buissnes for at least 1 more generation.  They are the type of companies who learn on thier mistakes.

And no, i sad Wii sports is selling BECAUSE OF THE WII, not the other way around

Exactly.. A lot of people bought Wii for Wii Sports.. I mean it's the same as people bringing home Wii Fir and being disappointed to find out it doesn't work without having the console to go along with it as well (rare but some people just don't listen or don't understand what they see or hear)..

Wii Music is the only Wii series game that I'd say sold a fair few copies only because it's a Wii Series title, all others were sold because people wanted them and the Wii sells due to it being needed to play those games.

Please make sure read carefully before posting.

About Sony.. If that rumoured PSP2 does indeed come out this year it will determine whether Sony stays or leaves the hardware side of the industry.. I'd expect them to move their development to 360 for the games that are in development just to get their money back on them and then they'll probably be gone. If PSP2 does well then expect Sony to go full steam ahead with PS4 plans

This is where you say that Wii Sports wouldn't sell without the name Wii in it. When in reality Wii Sports is one of the most important reasons for the public image of the name Wii.

I already said it's irrelevant whether Sony keeps posting losses. You originally said the financial success doesn't interest you, where i commented financial reasons being the only reason to keep in the business.
Sony wouldn't keep in the industry and offset the losses with other divisions profits, if they wouldn't see money in the business in the future. Their whole existance depends on the profit they can make.
