Forums - Nintendo - Even Wired thinks Sony's PR Spin on DSi is "crazy talk"

i love how people think the dsi is a minor upgrade. Someone I talked to recently also said that the highest selling console was the gameboy because he lumped them all together. Why do you all think it is the same thing? The dsi is a whole new console.
It will have exclusive games apart from the ds, different features, and more.
Will this be tracked as a different system? I think it should.
The psp2000/3000 are true upgrades, not separate consoles, and that is why they had a minor sales boost and then returned to normal sales again.

The difference here is that the psp discontinued previous versions whereas the dsi will be sold concurrently with the dslite. The question is whether or not the dsi can assume the role of the dslite in the way the psp2000 did for the psp.

I think that's a huge difference.

Earlier you said the DSi wasn't much new, now it's a major upgrade? You say it will have exclusive games, different features and more -  this is not enough to attract new sales?

So a true upgrade means you don't upgrade much at all?

Japan has seen quite the boost to DS sales with DSi selling the majority.

So the DSi is starting the eigth hardware generation of handhelds?  Good luck convincing anyone else of that, as it is quite a ridiculous notion.

It really comes off as if you're saying this as some sort of pre-emptive prediction that the DSi will see a sustained boost, not a PSP-2000/3000-esque hiccup - thus, it should be considered a totally different console.

So was the DSPhat and DSLite initially.  Then the market dictated that the Phat should be phased out.  I expect the DSLite to hang around longer than the Phat did due to the GBA slot.

Considering the DS is well on its way to being the top selling platform ever, is there really a missing demographic left?

Unborn babies?

I'm definitely not saying it will see a sustained boost. I'm saying that it will have a big impact early on, and then taper in sales and I predict that dslite will outsell it during its entire first year and maybe even longer. (although it will be hard to track because I bet we will track the dsi as "ds")

@flash
I said it was a "major upgrade"?
I know you're trying to push my words as a contradiction, but unfortunately its just reality. DSI is not that different from DS, is not that much of an improvement, but yet, Nintendo wants to start using the dsi as the lead platform soon.
A minor upgrade is dsfat to dslite. This is a new console.
....just as much as ps3 is a successor to ps2, even though the only improvement is graphics and online and some abilities.

The difference is this. PS2 to PS3 was a huge upgrade to all those aspects, whereas this "upgrade" is questionable as to how much of a difference it will actually make.

You have already said it is not a minor upgrade. "It will have exclusive games, different features and more". Thats a major upgrade.

The majority of games that release will be compatible with all DS skus. That's the difference between your PS2 to PS3 analogy and this. No games are released to be compatible with both PS2 and PS3. The architecture is completely different unlike the difference between the DS skus.

Like it or not this is just an upgraded DS system. Like Kenology said - you'll have a fat chance of convincing people this is a new console and it seems like VGChartz agrees as DSi sales are included in total DS sales.

with that said I realize that I now misread the OP completely. He is completely dissing ds original and it doesn't make sense. DS was never meant to be completely for kids, it was always about the expanded audience.

LOL! This reminded me of a video with a dog playing the wii xD

WOW.

The J man is disgusted right now. The DS has the best library of games this gen and is well on its way to have the best ever. Just because sony cant match this doesnt mean they should be butt hurt , "learn ,not hate, from the best".

And is there even a reason to hate on nintendo NOW that they are on a different planet compared to the psp in sales and software?

Get off nintendo's jock sony.

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!

What you fail to realize is that releasing games that work on both is the only VIABLE option that is available. There is no point in selling games for only the dsi when you can entertain both markets. The ps3 vs ps2 scenario might not work so well, but if it still had BC, as some still do, then your argument would be nothing.

Most devs make games that are not compatible for both because they want the added features of the new system that can't be supported by the older system, but it does happen occasionally. What I'm saying, and have been saying, is that the new features aren't attractive enough for this to happen.

The fact remains is that, if it were really successful, all games will be dsi based and not compatible with ds. That is, IF, the upgrades were good enough to warrant this move, because the upgrades are not compatible. This is a fundamental difference between slim version, lightscreens, or color for that matter. those upgrades are very significant but yet are not any "different".

PS: you used the words "major upgrade" to paint me as being hypocritical. I never said it was a major upgrade. I loosely implied that it was a change. Something can be different without a change in quality. Like milk is different from cheese. Neither is inherently better than the other.
