Now it seems that a lot of Sony fans think the only thing keeping the PS3 from being a real success is just a single price drop of $100. Now clearly that would get PS3s in more homes, but how would that benefit Sony in regards to profit? Lets say if Sony sold 10 million consoles at $300 a piece. Sony would actually lose a billion dollars compared to the $400 price tag. A hundred dollars makes a big difference especially when you consider that Sony may only earn of few dollars if any at all per console.
Another problem Sony has is what does the PS3 offer that a 360 owner can't get in regards to software? Most major 3rd party games are now found on both consoles and some sold millions more on the 360. The PS3 does have some popular Sony developed/published exclusives but the 360 exclusives are more in demand. This Playstation just doesn't have the advantage of getting major exclusives like Sony's predecessors.
Last problem is Sony dropped the ball by offering the most powerful machine. If the PS3 was equal to or even less powerful than the 360 and launched at $300 there would be no war. The PS3 would have sold a shit load of units and 3rd party developers would have stayed with Sony. The 360 would have had its niche audience but it wouldn't have had this much success. People talk about "Sony won" and "Microsoft won." Personally I think Microsoft won simply because Sony didn't blow them out of the water. Basically not being dominated was Microsoft's victory.
Sony says the PS3 is gonna be a great long term console thanks to superior specs as if that alone will play a role in superior games. PS1 won because it had the better games than the N64, PS2 won because it had the better games than the Xbox and Gamecube, but this time around the 360 and PS3 are about equal. Sony just doesn't have its edge like it did in the past. I'm intrigued to see if Sony can actually recover.
