Here's an idea.

What about a JRPG in which a psychologically disturbed middle-aged woman who goes in a coma.  While in this coma, she has to fight hallucinations and 'bosses' that are personified hallucinations of her inner most fears.  She starts as a child in the beginning of the game and as the games progresses, she becomes older and her warped imagination and personality flaws become more apparent not thru her actions in the halliculations but her recollections of her childhood, adolscence and young adulthood.

Sad thing is.. I made this up on the fly and it's more creative than most JRPG's.

Actually, you just ripped off the plot of American McGee's Alice...

And Eternal Sonata, in a manner of speaking.

I never played those games.  :\

Pixel Art can be fun.

I also detect a trace of Silent Hill II, now that I think on it.

Wasn't that a WRPG? I'm almost positive it was.

I guess I could buy it off of Steam and find out.

just wanted to remember something that wasn't like "save this!" "save that!" lol

Since we're doing this, "bosses that are personified hallucinations of her inner most fears" sounds alot like Persona 4.

Final Fantasy V was another one (it didn't try to hide the fact that it was phoning in the plot+characters).

Yeah, but what's widely considered one of the more boring, less memorable Final Fantasies? And guess what the common denominator among the less popular ones is?

Final Fantasy VIII?

V would have just as much of a fanbase as IV and VI if it had come out in the West less than a decade after it was made.

That is not true whatsoever, as most hardcore FF fans have long since played all the old FF's, and the consensus has been that V is the weak link of the SNES generation for quite some time.

What still spawns debates on forums? FF 7's character and stories, or FF V's addicting battle mechanics.

Great gameplay/music/graphics CAN equal a good RPG.

That plus an incredible story equals an unforgettable one.

How about NO formula or cliche. At all. Reinvent the story. Having something original and new, or at least quirky.

Hey now. Even Mother 3 had you save the world a little bit.

See, I think that's a key point people are over looking. It's not what you do, but how you do it.

On a side note, in the River King games your only goal is to save your sister... WITH FISH!

CIHYFS?

Chill dude, I was teasing: I know V isn't exactly the favored son. But it was: 1) damned fun to play through, 2) a good example of how battles don't have to be a chore, and 3) still waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than VII and VIII.

Yeah, I went there.

God, next people will be saying there's a JRPG where the main character is a Gorilla..

Way better than VIII, more fun than VII but overall about on par with it.

Plus Exdeath's theme rules.
