Here's an idea.

What about a JRPG in which a psychologically disturbed middle-aged woman who goes in a coma.  While in this coma, she has to fight hallucinations and 'bosses' that are personified hallucinations of her inner most fears.  She starts as a child in the beginning of the game and as the games progresses, she becomes older and her warped imagination and personality flaws become more apparent not thru her actions in the halliculations but her recollections of her childhood, adolscence and young adulthood.

Sad thing is.. I made this up on the fly and it's more creative than most JRPG's.

Actually, you just ripped off the plot of American McGee's Alice...

And Eternal Sonata, in a manner of speaking.

I also detect a trace of Silent Hill II, now that I think on it.

Since we're doing this, "bosses that are personified hallucinations of her inner most fears" sounds alot like Persona 4.

God, next people will be saying there's a JRPG where the main character is a Gorilla..

well there was a game where you played as various creatures, evolving yourself as you see fit.  Your damage and stats were based on how you evolved, so I could think of it as an Action JRPG.  Just not sure it was actually developed in Japan.

-grabs loaded revolver-

-turns safety off-

-points at forehead-

I'm about to do it..

Persona 3

Oh well played sir.

Very well played.

How about a JRPG where you play a guy playing a JRPG with a 'save the world' plot?

Your character's mom would wake you up, then you turn on your JRPG and that character's mom wakes them up!

Damn! You beat me to it.

Good thing I scrolled down before posting....

EDIT: Is there a game where the main character starts out trying to save the world, but ends up deciding not to? I don't mean not being able to and trying to the very end, but deciding not to even though it is possible when the decision is made.

World Destruction might have done that, but from where the story was going it might not have, and I may never know because the game was too boring so I stopped playing.

I'm starting to like this. Name a plot concept, and we'll think of a JRPG that has a similar concept.

ANY Bioware game, evil ending

Good choice...I'm trying to be reasonable here because if I can go all out on plots then you should be allowed to use literature which is where the real story experimentation goes on. I'll mostly try to avoid downer endings because there's way too many possibilities there.

How about a story about keeping someone alive? It can't be where the person is crucial to keeping the world alive, or anything else where it's just an extention of saving the world, or some great higher system that can be equated with "world" (like civilized life).
