Forums - Nintendo - DS is breaking away the 2:1 against PSP a bit too fast?

A few months ago, DS would stay pretty close to 2:1 against PSP and grow slowly up and passed that 2:1 mark about a month(?) ago. Now, the gap seems to grow much faster, or is it just me growing older? (maybe both)

I think its accelerating. Perhaps more and more PSP users/buyers are using it as a music/movie player and fewer are using it to play games... 3rd party support is weakening compared to the DS, and an AAA first party title Jean D'arc sells very poorly... perhaps PSP is in trouble.
Who knows? May be sony will be forced to release PSP2 in 2009. If they do, it will probably have 2 analog nubs, xbox level graphics, and better integrated movie/music features. It will probably sell pretty wella nd make Sony some money, but I predict that Nintendo will be able to ride the DS until 2011, and then relases their own DS2 that also has gamecube/close to xbox level graphics, 2 screens, touch screen, tilt, and will probably be much cheaper. When that happens, DS2 will probably overtake PSP2's 2 year lead fairly quickly...
I wonder what Sony's plan is for its portable(s)?

The thing with PSP is that the Greatest Hits title are selling. They are only $20 bucks and thats all most gamers need.

You'll the two GTA's, Daxter, Socom, and a few other on the second page every week.

A big thing against PSP is the HUGE lack of advertising. I hardly ever see a PSP game ad anywhere else than on gaming websites.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Check out MyAnimeList and my Game Collection. Owner of the 5 millionth post.

I agree... the DS is zooming away... I remember 3 months ago when it was just about tracking 2 to 1, now the DS is flyingg man...

Right and the DS advertisments are where? Honestly, I see a good 2-3 different PSP adds a season. Compare that to DS ads which I see.... never. I think I have only seen 1 DS ad on TV and that was for elite beat agents. DS does have a lot of magazine ads though :/

Thats true in the U.S. as well. My friend and I got DS's at launch, and once good multiplayer games started coming out (tetris, mario kart, metroid prime hunters, new super mario bros, ect) everyone else we were friends with wanted to play to and BAM now all my friends have DS's...

I bet thats happening all over the world even

I thought it's selling so well because of its games...

Your crystal ball must be broken. They have a 2 for 1 sale at Spencer's.

They're allowed to bring DS to schools because in some instances, its so popular and there's so much good educational software on it that some classes use it as a teaching medium. I read an article where some groups published software to augment teaching.

As an aside, I'm finally thinking of getting one, any chances at all of there being a price cut anytime soon? Maybe?

Haha awesome post Dolla!

Seriously though I rarely use my PSP for actual purchased games.  I have bought 5 games in almost 2 years of owning the system, and one of them I just bought a couple days ago (Jeanne D'Arc, which is awesome).  It's not that it goes unused.  I play old roms on it a lot, but on my DS I have bought almost 30 games (most recently Rune Factory and Heroes of Mana).

darconi, don't count on a price cut anytime before 2008.

Anyway, yeah I think the problem is that the PSP has very little remaining 3rd party support, and Sony's 1st party isn't good enough to push the platform alone.  Take SE for example:  They have 8 PSP games made/in production, but 6 of them are remakes of old games.  They have 17 DS games made/in production, including the main game in their second largest franchise, and only 5 of those are remakes.  It's pretty much the same accross all 3rd parties.

There is the occaissional PSP game, but owning a PSP is like owning a Gamecube that plays old roms but doesn't have Nintendo games.  You get the occaissional 3rd party gem, but overall support is very weak.
