Forums - Nintendo - A Question for Wii Owners

PC was my primary gaming platform. More specifically the MMORPG genre of games. Unfortunately the genre has stagnated and I needed some kind of gaming fix.

I owned both a N64 and a Gamecube. I actually think the N64 had a better first year lineup. Mario, Mariokart, Starfox, Shadows, Blastcorps, and Pilotwings were all very satisfying and that was the first six months. Kind of disappointed by the Wii offerings up until this point.

Why the Wii over the other two. Personally I played with Sony on the PC, and they really upset me. Microsoft was something I did not know. The Wii was cheaper, and I knew I would get a dozen games for the system I would like. I think there is a element of nostalgia for the returning gamer. Returning gamers just might feel more comfortable with Nintendo.

NES - SNES - N64 - GC
and
Game Gear - GBA
and
Mega Drive

Don't own a Wii yet, but I will definitely get one for Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Super Paper Mario, Wii Fit, Mario & Sonic, Runaway 2, ...

Personally, I'd have been happy with a Gamecube II. Or even 5 more years of Gamecube I. Nintendo makes the games I love, no matter what hardware.
On the other hand, their will to innovate is welcome, and new concepts like Wii Fit sound very nice. I've experimented with alternative control methods myself (a friend and I made a "Controller Sofa" + a simple Pong-like game... very fun).

Currently playing: NSMB (Wii)

Waiting for: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii), The Last Story (Wii), Golden Sun (DS), Portal 2 (Wii? or OSX), Metroid: Other M (Wii),
... and of course Zelda (Wii)

Nah, I got one too. Mostly played games I could just play in the arcades, though.

Main console last generation was easily PS2, I think I got my cube in late 2005 iirc and even then mostly because of Prime 1 & 2.

Both consoles have somewhat interesting stories, since they were both purchased used:

My PS2 I got from a gamestop iirc, and it had problems almost right away so I went to walmart and got another PS2 and returned the broken gamestop one in the new one's packaging =P

The cube I got from an ebay auction and for like $200+$38 shipping it came with:

  • Pikmin 1
  • Pikmin 2
  • Metroid Prime 1
  • Metroid Prime 2
  • Splinter Cell
  • Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
  • Ghost Recon
  • Mario Sunshine
  • Super Smash Brothers Melee
  • Sonic Mega Collection
  • And 3 crap games: Minority Report, Some BMX game, and Pacman Fever.
  • Nintendo Controller
  • 3rd Part Turbo Controller
  • Memory Card

Personally I thought that was a damn good bargain. I actually found the auction when I was thinking "Ok I will just take a look at whats available.." and I found it sitting at like $80, I put a max bid of $300 on it at the 10 second left mark and won. Definitely a huge impulse buy (I hate j00 ebay!) but I have never regretted it.

Edit: Forgot 3 things from the auction. They are added now~

I've owned the original gameboy and PS2. The platform of choice was always PC, but wii gets more and more time lately

.

Last generation PS2, i have an N64 but didn't buy GC

Hmm, let's see. I've had quite an extensive list of consoles (average in this community, I'm assuming):

NES
SNES (LD)
N64 (LD)
Gamecube (LD)
Wii (LD)
Gameboy
Gameboy Pocket
Gameboy Color (LD)
Gameboy Advance (LD)
Gameboy Advance SP (LD)
DS (LD)

Sega Genesis
Sega Gamegear

PS1
PS2 (Never actually bought one, but I had such easy access to one I felt like I owned it)

XBox

As you can see, I am mostly a Nintendo man, but I'm not so close-minded as to not have bought other consoles. You'll notice that I bought most Nintendo consoles and handhelds on launch day (LD) while I left off other systems till later on. This is simply a prioritizing of what I wanted. I'm a poor highschool kid (previously a poor middle school and elementary school kid) and I had to wait a while to get a secondary system through yard sales and other cheap options.

I only buy systems that have enough games to equal the price tag. For the Wii at launch, it needed 5 games I wanted ($250/$50 = 5 games) and easily had that so I bought a Wii at launch. I didn't buy all those games, but I need to know that I can have some sort of selection.

For the Gamecube I did the same thing. At launch it didn't have the games I wanted so I waited until there were enough games. I don't really play brand loyalty too much (one of my friends thought I was actually a Sony fanboy because I had more PS2 games than anything else), I just go where the games are.

I think my brother had a friend who had one.  Or maybe it was his friend's cousin.
