Forums - Gaming - You guys who have been gaming since the 3rd/4th generations (or even before them)...

Console owner since 86/87  when NES was released.  However I would play Atari at friend's house.

I think I enjoy games as much as I use to, but for different reasons.  In the 80s, you played for fun, with your friends... tried to unlock all the secrets and beat Super Mario Bros.  Beating the game was a big accomplishment.

Nowdays, there's competetive multiplayer, coop, single player, achievemetns, trophies, etc... It's a different type of fun, but still very enjoyable.

If it wasn't, we wouldn't be here on gaming websites, tracking game sales, and buying consoles/games.  We'd fine another hobby.

PC gaming on the other hand, went down hill imo.  I loved the 80s & 90s for PC gaming, but after 2001, it went downhill for me.  Here's hoping Blizzard can bring back PC magic with Starcraft 2.

I'd have to say no, because most games that come out are garbage like Wii Sports and Mario party, and then a bunch of stupid shooters.

Last-gen was good, but this one is really bad mostly because of the Wii. It reminds me of the PS1/64 days... another awful generation.

I've been a huge gamer since NES days though I owned both an Atari and NES, and have owned just about every console to release after that.

For me the PS1/N64 gen was an amazing leap in gaming with everything being turned towards 3D gaming, and because of that there were a lot of companies taking chances with their game designs some working amazing some not so much, but when people started to figure out what the big boys were doing like OoT with Z targeting, the next gen Xbox, GC, and PS2 was much more of the same games just with fixes, little innovation and quite frankly by the end of the gen I was bored to tears but that's why I was hardcore into PC gaming last gen.

This gen it all started with the DS and I saw how creative games were getting and it gave me much of the same feel that the NES/ SNES/Gen/N64/PS1 gave me when I opened them up, not knowing what to expect, and then being pleasantly surprised, Nintendo continued that with the Wii and much to my surprise how much Motion + IR can change gaming and make it fresh and entertaining once more, couple that with Wii having my favorite SNES/NES/Gen/N64 games and my PS3 covering the few and far between games I really enjoy playing with a normal controller or the exclusives to PS3 like LBP and this generation is by far better then last and is up there with the SNES/Gen generation.

MaxwellGT2000 - "Does the amount of times you beat it count towards how hardcore you are?"

Wii Friend Code - 5882 9717 7391 0918 (PM me if you add me), PSN - MaxwellGT2000, XBL - BlkKniteCecil, MaxwellGT2000

I had the most fun during N64/PS era, I had N64 the longest. Was about 10 years old (got it right when N64 came out), I do think the kid fun effect really played a role into it.

I think its' good I don't have that much fun anymore but still good to play from time to time. Also for me, I do feel like there are too many similar games out now, mostly FPS stand out for me in this category.

way back when? Wasn't it like just last week?

I have several favorite games from each generation from the 3rd and up, but it seems that each new generation has fewer gems than the last, because nobody's trying anything new.

I think the 3rd and 4th generations had the best beat 'em ups, shoot 'em ups, platformers, and RPGs, and the advent of 3-D dumbed them down into hack 'n' slash buttonmashers, FPS, third person adventure, and CGI movies, respectively.

(This is horribly simplifying the matter, but I don't feel like listing exceptions right now. I'll just say that I think controlling 3-D games is better with 3-D controlling methods, like "the wagglez.")

Outside of games that use new interfaces, like Guitar Hero, SoundVoyager, touchscreen games, and motion control games, I already know which developers I can trust, and nothing new is as awesome as Katamari or Portal.

Portal came out in 2007! That is a current-gen game!

Oops.  I totally messed up what I meant to say.

I meant that nothing new (other than Katamari and Portal) is as awesome as Katamari and Portal.  Those are some of the only new games with traditional controller interfaces that introduce new gameplay elements that I'm really madly in love with.

I really got into games around the time of the Genesis.  For me, it was easier to get into games back then and almost every game that I owned, I really enjoyed and could play over and over again.  I rented alot of games that I thought were bad so I wasn't too much of "kids like anything kid".

Nowadays, I don't enjoy gaming as much.  The genres that i really loved are pretty much dead.  Plus, i'm older and few games are actually mature despite being M-rated.  For the games that I really love, I have just as much fun now as I did back then.  But back then it was like 100% of the games that I owned.  Now its maybe like 20% of the games that I own.  But I paid for all of these games so it upsets me.  I feel like none of my metrics have changed, but the games just aren't doing it for me anymore.

But maybe i'm like the old man gamer and the industry changed around me and I refused to go with the times.  My brother plays games and he's like 9.  He really likes it.  Although I'll say this... he has like 20+ games and doesn't really like playing any of them once he gets a new one.

New games are like crack.  They get you really high but it only lasts 5 minutes then you need to find something else.  Maybe its a business move though.  If you can keep the customers coming back every few weeks at $60 a head, thats way better than selling a product for $60 that keeps em high for months.

My first consoles was a Genesis, but I also bought a Master System and a SNES during the 4th gen.

I think I've had more fun this gen than the 4th due to putting more thought into what games I buy
