Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony abandons psp fans, focuses on their bleeding wound.

I get kind of mad when I think about it... But the psp could have been bigger than the DS, if sony had put their full support in it. Hell, it's best year was it's first - 2005, when it outsold the DS for a number of weeks. The DS lite was released, and sony had no chance. UNLESS, they would have had the same great marketing the DS had at the time, and a slightly lower price.

2006 came and went, with medium software support.

And when the ps3 launched.. And it seemed sony lost sight of the psp, and tried to push the ps3 onto people.

Now, if sony would have bitten the bullet, and sold the psp for a slightly higher loss (other than at launch), maybe something could have been different. They did so with the ps3... Why not the psp?

So, the ps3 is like a twin, feeding off the other twins life support (the psp).

I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

Sony's strategy of being hip and selling sports, licensed movie, and GTA games could only push the PSP so much. You have to remember that until Nintendogs was released, Nintendo has released very few of their big games/franchises. Nintendogs was pretty much the turning point along with the DS Lite and there was little Sony could do. If it counts for anything, they made a good effort. Sony did very little to emphasize software (something Microsoft did well with the 360) and was struck by widespread piracy.

Oh please...

Not gonna even try...

I love my PSP. Then again I love RPGs (which the PSP actually has a respectable number of), and I am willing to go out and find out-of-print games for it.

I am only sad because the PSP section of major retailers is too small to carry many titles -- especially JRPGs. Also... kinda upset that I still don't have a PSP GPS.

Otherwise... PSP seems great to me. Sony has never abandoned it in the slightest. Even the list of 1st/2nd party titles for it is downright stellar...

  • LocoRoco
  • Patapon
  • Killzone: Liberation
  • Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
  • Daxter
  • God of War: Chains of Olympus
  • SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 1 & 2
  • Secret Agent Clank
  • Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (and its sequel which I forget the name of)
  • MLB
  • Hot Shots Golf

Upcoming 1st party:

  • Resistance: Retribution
  • LocoRoco 2
  • Patapon 2

Almost every one of those titles is downright fantastic, exactly as I expect from Sony 1st and 2nd party. The 3rd party support is not as good, but its there if you look for it -- a ton of good series from the PS2 have a presense on the PSP.. Metal Gear, Prince of Persia, Monster Hunter, Madden, Tiger Woods, even classic 3rd party XBox series' like Splinter Cell do.

I just don't see where the software is lacking. The sales are lacking.. and that's kinda wierd. Although... the PSP sells to more than just gamers by nature.

Sony has already supported the PSP a lot, and it didn't bring enough people with software purchasing habits. The attach rate is quite bad, due to piracy or people using it for other purposes or both. This means one of the primary purposes of 1st/2nd parties has failed (to form a viable userbase from scratch), even if it's not their fault.

They probably think it's more worthwhile to focus on the PS3, and I can't blame them. At least the PS3 sells a healthy amount of software.

Think about these two statements for a bit...

The PSP leeched off the success of the PS2, back before its release people assumed the PSP would succede simply because the PS1/2 did. However, after its first year it was apparent this was not going to happen, so t was all downhill from there

Hmm I dunno. Apparently this year sony is going to have the biggest psp lineup ever. But yeah they could put a little more effort into it, maybe it's not making enough profit?

As an example of PSP's software sales problem, look at this holiday's shipment data from Sony:

Notice how the PSP sold less than half as much software as the PS3 did, despite PSP's userbase being more than twice as big. Its hardware and software sales are also declining from the last holiday, by 12-15%.

The problem with the PSP was Sony delivered what they promised ... A "Portable PS2" sounds like a great idea to many people, but the kind of gameplay experience and features people want from a portable system are quite a bit different than what people want from a home console.
