Forums - Sales - It looks like the PS3 and Xbox 360 basically sold the same amount in 2008

Too bad developers don't look at shipped numbers when deciding whether to go exclusive :(

i don't think any 3rd party will go exclusive this gen(well 85% of them).  even if you money hat them they rather sell their game on both platforms.

Yeah, I agree with this.

Exclusives are minor this gen on Ps3/X360. For developers, they're almost considered an platform combined I guess.

So it is really (as many have said) "Should I put my title on Wii, or Ps3/X360 (and possibly PC)?"

Shipped + padding for Sony.

Regardless, lets not count our chickens before they hatch, shall we? This next quarter for Sony will tell the story on how they're doing. If VGC is right, then Sony will not ship very many units this quarter (probably between 500k-1m), while MS out-ships them by a wide margin.

Unless GfK comes out with new data that backs Sony up, I don't see how VGC could have under/overtracked any system unless there are major 'others' discrepancies in Taiwan, Korea, and the like. Of course, few bother to tell us exactly how good/bad systems are doing in SE asia, S America, and other obscure markets.

exactly,,,and this is the very reason that MS has been only succesfull in getting DLCs lately.the cost of omitting the other version is just too much that even MS can't afford to do it left and right(not gonna bother to even talk about sony and buying 3rd party exclusives).

Looking at the shipped numbers.

# PlayStation 3: 21.35m (VGC = 19.5M)
# Wii: 44.97m (VGC 45.55M)
# Xbox 360: 28.45m (27.4M)
# PlayStation 2: 138.15m (124M)
# NDS: 96.22m (97.1M)
# PSP: 51.26m" (43.3M)

Are all of these numbers accurate as of last quarter?

If so, it would seem that the Wii and DS are overtracked slightly (~500-1m), while the PS2 and PSP are wildly undertracked.

I think the rule of thumb we need to take for console shipments is that there HAS to be a gap of ~500k units between manfacturing numbers and VGC sell through, as there will always be that many unsold to customers in the supply chain. But it's far harder to make proper arguments against a system being under-represented on VGC. Of course, in the PSP and PS2 case, we have the luxury of knowing that there's no way THAT many systems would be sitting on shelves.

If Sony shipped 1M in Q1, that would mean that 2.5M would be the very max they could sell really.

In the first 4 (of 13) weeks, it has sold 750K. Condiering that these weeks have a tad of holiday boost still in, we can expect lower onwards. So 2-2.25M.

I think you're actually right (as you may see from how I wrote my post, I didn't think so to start with).

Yeah, I think you're right with that.

There's now been several people saying that Wii is overtracked, X360 is overtracked and Ps3 is undertracked. (This thread is still fine though, it discusses something completely differently)

Personally, I can't see why that (above) shouldn't be the case. But before going hoola bananas, I'm going to wait and see what the Source/Ioi says.

Oh, and could anyone find the regional breakdowns, or don't they do that anymore?

VGChartz numbers (sold)

11.5M X360s

10.6M Ps3s.

Now, this number might be even more incorrect than it seems.

The 360 is currently having a breeze going with it. So Microsoft would now expect more sales than Sony would, right? Well, last christmas it was either the opposite way around, or they were pretty tied.

So, that means that the X360 should now have more X360s in stores than they had at the start of 08, right? The Ps3 should be pretty much the same.

So, the shipped number should > the sold number for X360. It should be pretty equal for Ps3.

Edit:

Looking at the shipped numbers.

# PlayStation 3: 21.35m (VGC = 19.5M)
# Wii: 44.97m (VGC 45.55M)
# Xbox 360: 28.45m (27.4M)
# PlayStation 2: 138.15m (124M)
# NDS: 96.22m (97.1M)
# PSP: 51.26m" (43.3M)

I have to say that this is just bloody insane.

Ps3 numbers might be correct. 1.8M seems like a lot, but Ps3 sold less than Sony thought it would during christmas, right? Still, it's probably undertracked a bit.

Wii numbers > shipments by 500K. Even if Wii is virtually sold out, there's still ~ 500K unsold Wiis at that time (which would be 1/3 of the Ps3s). Overtracked by ~ 1M

X360 numbers seems pretty decent actually. But, the X360 shipped number (compared to sold) should be higher than Sony's. 27M blank sold seems more likely to me, but X360 seems pretty good.

Playstation 2. WHAT THE HELL? We have Ps2 at selling 8M in 08. Sony has shipped at 8.8M (and as expectations for next year are lower ~ 1M undertracked). Where did those 14M come from? That error must have been there a long, long time.

NDS. Was virtually sold out in the US, but should still have ~ 750K in stores (or so I assume). It is probably overtracked by more than 1.5M.

PsP. Again, What the heck? We have it at selling 13M, vs 16M shipped. Still, where did those other 5M come from? This error must also have been here a long time.

The 360 was supply constraint at this time last year.. so yeah they would have more consoles on the market compared to last year

Who do you think buys the consoles from Sony?  I know VGChartz attempts to track sell-through, but this is a shipment thread and Sony's customers are the retailers.  You will have to wait to see the next couple of quarterly shipments to say anything negative about Sony.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Those numbers can be explained by the fact PS3/X360/Wii and NDS got majority of sales in well developed regions (NA, Europe, Australia, Japan) and for those sales data are more credible and easier to check.

While PS2 and PSP might be highly succesfull in regions without proper sales tracking like South America, big parts of Asia (and those platforms should be especially dominant in high piracy markets)

Remember that PS2 only recently debuted in India for example.
