I would say the minimum gap would be about 7,000,000 units and the maximum would be about 14,000,000 units.

This.

Well that would mean you expect the 360 to increase its gap to 14 million and the PS3 to outsell the 360 by 7 million in the second half of 2009?

Or an early year ps3 cut would decrease it to 7 mil, then M$ makes it back later.

I am just riding on the back of Squil here.

Sure. It's just that I don't expect one console to outsell the other one by 7 million in just one year. To achieve this the number 2 console would have to sell at least 15 million units as I highly doubt any console is going to sell less than 8 million units next year.

I dont expect the gap to drop at all. There will be the odd couple of weeks during big games though. The momentum is with M$. Game stores here have already cut PS3 room to 2 sections in my City, 360 has 8 now generally and the Wii 13 at last visit on Jan 02nd.

I'd personally expect the gap to decrease to 6 million units as this is the PS3's third full year on the market and the Xbox360 should see a slower year next year. It's just the huge difference for me. You know, this year the gap didn't change that much. It was at 7 million at the beginning of the year, then decreased and is now at 8 million.

Dont forget the gap was 7 mill to start 2008 after the figures were changed in Jan as we undertracked badly. I have a feeling the gap is more like 8.5 - 9 mill right now. We will have to see when the figures are changed.

PS3 price cut last year made tracking hard through christmas and I believe the same will happen with 360. Wait for the figures to be updated via NPD and such.

ding ding ding, we have a winner.

In gameshow fashion, i will go with

minimum- 8 (or whatever it is right now)

maximum 12.9 M

360 continues to pull away.

Trying to convince me the Wii is a real adult game machine 'if you play it right' is like trying to convince me Tofu tastes great 'if you just cook it right'

Maximum gap: 8,75 million
Minimum gap: 5,50 million

I'm not going to try to estimate, but I will state this.

Last year, there was a very long period when Sony was catching up with Microsoft. They closed the gap from an initial 7m to 5m.

Then Microsoft pulled a price cut. 360s started selling a little more.

Then Microsoft released the NXE. 360s started selling a lot more.

Now the gap is 8m - more than it was when the PS3 launched. And it's continuing to grow. I'm not sure what's going to happen, but if Sony doesn't pull some very big changes, the 360 will continue expanding that gap.
