The R4 carts and similar clones used for playing backups on the DS....

True its piss easy to do, but getting the cart isn't *that* easy. They are all made in china so have to be imported and generally aren't on sale that prominently on USEU sites. Although easy enough to get if you want one.

The thing with the PSP is that you don't actually need anything at all to keep it hacked once done.

Much like the Xbox 360, no modchip or anything. If you've got the bits you can do it yourself.

Well that point is debatable. It's not hard to get your hands on one in my region of the globe anyway.

As for the PSP, the step involving the 'pandora's battery' sounds complicated, and difficult if you don't know someone with a hacked PSP. Furthermore, brand new PSP's can't be hacked I gather. (Much like the DSi apparently).

But I wouldn't know which is easier really, because I've never hacked a PSP. And I don't pirate DS games either. I like having physical copies, and instruction manuals. A friend of mine does own a flashcart however, and through him I can try games out first before I purchase them. Does that mean I support piracy, in an indirect way? I don't think so. At least I buy my games. My friend on the other hand, has never bought a DS game in his life.

The issue here is demography. What is the largest audience for the PSP? Teens and young adult? And what self respecting teen or yound adult would NOT attempt to hack their PSP when its oh-so-simple? Most of them would consider it mandatory point of honour, even if they never pirate a damn game or even play the system. The DS has a much more broader demography that include women and young children who generally either don't have the knowledge or the incentive to hack it.

Don't get me wrong, the DS is the undisputed king of the handheld and no amount of argument about PSP's piracy argument would change that, but the situation of the 2 handheld are very different.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Yes, you have a point. One that was raised previously in this thread by Kirby. But the DS has a broader and larger demographic that includes hardcore teen and young adult gamers. What I'm saying is that DS piracy is also oh-so-simple and I suspect it's just as much a problem for the DS as it is for the PSP. (Hence Nintendo's strategy of releasing firmware updates to the DSi).

About hacking stuff,
it`s just, most DS games are casual, and casual gamers don`t bother hacking DS.
Just look at hardcore 3rd party games sales in NA. Are they above 1 mln.? Not every game pass 300-500k mark.

This year DS SW sales:
Final Fantasy IV DS Square Enix 371,339
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin Nintendo 355,797
Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village Nintendo 333,696
Chrono Trigger Square Enix 285,965
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates Square Enix 256,439
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 Square Enix 249,934
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed LucasArts 231,704

This year PSP SW sales:
God of War: Chains of Olympus Sony Computer Entertainment 979,082

6 More Brain Training Nintendo 1,609,219
7 Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon 2: Time / Darkness Exploration Team Nintendo 1,404,806

Strong 1st party casual friendly line-up. Seven games, that give around 10 mln. SW alone.

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

Thanks Crazzyman, that makes sense.

But then again, this explanation can be used for both formats, and is consistent with my belief that piracy is rampant on the DS too. That is to say, pirates are responsible for low sales of hardcore games on both the DS and PSP. The casual titles however remain unaffected.

As someone who has been into console hacking since the late 1990's, I can say with great certainty that it's far easier to hack a DS than it is a PSP.

The only exception to this is PSP's that were released prior to the middle of 2005 and ran the v1.5 firmware, in which case it was capable to run unsigned code right from the start.

As it stands right now, hacking of a PSP requires a person to hardmod a battery, format a MSPd, and install and configure software. Modding a DS, on the other hand, only requires that a person buy a flash cart(which is available via Amazon, and even if it weren't, I doubt that anyone who wanted to hack their console would have any trouble whatsoever finding one from another website) and be competent enough to use the "copy and paste" function.

Thanks for clarifying that Lord N. I suspected as much.

I have a hacked PSP, its not bad for what it is - when hacked.

Total waste of time though considering its game library if it wasn't hacked.

I hardly touch mine except for playing classic PS1 games and the odd PSP RPG but there's not much decent big budget stuff available for it.

I sometimes think people saying its well supported software wise are off their trolley.

2-3 good games a YEAR do not count as support.

Wha? The PSP gets way more than 2-3 good games a year!
