1/ "lack of good games even these days" ?

...

2/ people wanting a console and buying PS3 for games may discover BR later
==> new consumer attraction

3/ BR player are very low in price now so u dont need to buy the expensive PS3 to play BR
==> BR players less sales hurted than before ?

just my 2 cents

 I'm having a huge case of deja vu right now while reading this post.... has this thread happened before?

Well some of the arguments do have the stink of 2007 on them, so you may want to search around then. Don't blame bdbdbd though. He's just trying to be retro, like when bellbottoms went back in style.

 they aren't called bellbottoms anymore so when parents say "I use to wear bellbottoms" the kids can be like "gosh mom these arent bellbottoms im nothing like you!"

but seriously I felt like i really read libell's post before and I felt like it was from him too....

 sincerely, I just dont remember

but overall, there are so much duplicate thread on VGChartz ... it is fairly possible.

As we all know, BD have been touted as the main selling point, over 360, for PS3 ever since PS3 had its launch. Even these days, you still see BD being mentioned as an important feature for PS3, to offset its lack of good games. But what do the PS3 sales numbers mean to movie studios and hardware manufacturers?

Every PS3 sold to view BD movies, is away from the profitable standalone players, whether it's Sony, Toshiba or LG, only makes the industry to lose profits. Despite every PS3 being a BD capable player, every PS3 isn't used to view BD movies, unlike every standalone player, creating uncertainity among the publishers about how many BD players there are in reality and causing them to cut down their investments to BD.

What do you think? Discuss.

I suppose you're right.

I think I'll go play Uncharted now, when I've finished that I'll play some R2, then start playing my new LBP. I have to see if I can find Valkyria Chronicles in stores anywhere. By the way, I hope MGS4 gets a trophy patch. I just finished my second playthrough of Tools of Destruction.

Sorry, what were you saying?

OT: Nah. People who want blu-ray get standalone players. People who want a Sony console OR a console and blu-ray get the PS3. Although I suppose it is confusing, they should do a survey of PS3 users, and see which use them for gaming purely (me), gaming and blu-ray and only blu-ray viewing.

Ok, that one sentence is getting too much attention. Why it is there, is because people do use it to counter the comments about games library. As i've already said, it's getting used less all the time as the games library gets better.

It's very easy to survey with consoles that are online, but since PS3 offers more features for people who play games, not that much for movie viewers, it's propable that consoles online are geared towards gamers, which eat the credibility a little, if Sony would announce stats they'd collect automatically.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

This would be an issue if BD players were more expensive than PS3s.

"The lack of ps3 games" is taboo?Come on..
But I think you are somewhat right.But also,many buy Ps3 for Blu-ray,so there goes some of PS3:s software.

It's actually an issue when BD players are more profitable than PS3. If two million PS3:s are sold instead of standalone players and if a standalone player creates 50 more profit per unit sold, it's hundred million lost in profit.

@Simulacrum: Yes, it effects the game sales too. PS3 has the worst attach rate of the three, if i recall (which is comparable with Wiis attach rate due to being released at the same time period).

The players are cheaper. And BD sales have been rising. Don't see a problem.

4 ≈ One

i dont see why this is a problem.

I will look past the "offset its lack of good games" comment because I don't believe that is what you were trying to say. Yes the PS3 does hurt Blu-ray to some degree. The PS3 is the best Blu-ray player on the market and it is a great value. The biggest problem for the industry is the pending price cut for the PS3. Currently you can get good stand alone players for less than a PS3, but next year that probably won't be the case. Anyway, the PS3/Sony established Blu-ray as the optical format to replace DVD so the benefits of the PS3 outweigh the harm.

Media reports suggest that stand alone players are selling very well this Christmas and The Dark Knight just sold 1.7 million Blu-ray copies. So I guess the format is doing well.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

@OP:
I really can't tell, but this Xmas, for the first time, I'm seeing in Italy PS3 advertised as a console that's also a good BD player.
Obviously the effect desired by Sony was synergy, and as BD won format war, up until now it's BD that had the single most recognizable bigger benefit, maybe now Sony wants to gather some and BD to give, but they should admit that what most damaged the desired sinergy, at least on PS3 side, were high launch price, scattered launch and blue lasers shortages at launch time, right when the most enthusiast technophile early adopters were most eager to spend, when it was an absolute novelty.
