No PS3 Price Cuts Before Summer 09

The Wii's cheap and sells a ton. The 360's getting cheaper, and sales are picking up. But the poor old PS3? It's expensive, and according to SCEE's David Reeves, will be expensive for a while.

No, we are not going to go down in price on PS3 – neither are we going to go down in price on PS3 in spring time either. Absolutely not, whatever you might have heard to the contrary. Our strategy is very much value added.

That doesn’t mean we are going to add pieces of software – we might add original ideas to the machine. What we want is to make the machine value for money.

The majority of that will come as a disappointment to those still waiting to dip their toes in the Sea of PlayStation 3. That last bit, though? About adding "original ideas"? That's something to hold onto, and as the 360 is showing with Netflix (and indeed, the PS3 in Europe with PlayTV), adding "extra shit" to your console can go a long way to appealing to new buyers.

That said, lower prices probably do more.

I don't know how much more David Reeves I can take this week.

"We also grow the market through new products – some work, some don’t, that’s just the Sony way. And on that point, another thing we have committed to for supporting market growth is putting out quality hardware – you don’t grow the market by putting out shoddy machines."

Funny, I thought the PS1/PS2 did an admirable job of expanding the market. The markedly more reliable PS3, on the other hand...

Why are people surprised by this? Sony is already taking huge losses with every PS3 sold. They can't even afford to sell it at its current price; they certainly can't afford to sell it for less. Depending on who you ask, they might not even be able to sustain the the damage inflicted by PS3's current price for all that much longer; they certainly can't go any lower and take even more damage.

This is why I worry about the PS3. A price cut very well might be able to turn the PS3's fortunes around. But Sony won't do it, and they won't do it because they CAN'T do it. Not until it sells more, at any rate, but it won't sell more until the price is cut, and so the cycle continues.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

I think many are surprised (like me) because of strong rumors that the price would drop by March..

I know it was a rumor... but still, more rumors have been true this gen then false, the publicized ones that is..

Yeah...wtf thx for the free skin bump texture.

I wonder how much of this is the usual PR bullshit so people don't hold off until the price cut. Adding extra value may be the only route they can take, but it has to be obvious enough and perceived as worth an extra $200 if they want to match 360 sales, which without significant graphical advantages will be very hard indeed.

A price cut in summer would be possible: if they do a price cut in spring, they will have to do a second one before christmas (cause MS will do another one for sure). Doing it in the summer is a good deal: they cut it in the middle of the year, but not so far away from xmas!

No seriously, they really should cut the price for KZ2 release, at least in the states and europe. And in japan too!
