There's no way PS3 will be able to overtake 360, probably ever, never mind in 08.

USA+Japan (if you combine the two regions sales by media create and NPD) has been a win for 360 almost every single month since PS3 launched.

360 has gained 1.4 million on PS3 in USA by NPD since PS3 launched, and is 4.3 million ahead overall in USA. So what if Sony wins by 20,000 or 40,000 this month? It wont even make a dent, then 360 will go back into the lead next month.

That leaves Europe, where 360 has a 1 million and growing lead in the UK (as it's outselling PS3) lead.

I put Europe at a weekly tie right now. Vgchartz can have other ideas but for me, I put that at really a tie. We know in Germany, supposedly a place where 360 is dead, PS3 only gained 3,000 in a month. Germany, France, Spain, and Italy have to be where PS3 makes ground. But that's not impressive.

PS3 has gone ahead (in monthly/weekly)for a little while now because of the price drop, but that momentum is falling off. And the best it could do was almost a tie in Canad NPD just released. If that holds up in the usa July it's not impressive.

Then we have the fact 360 just got a price drop, and a repositioning of sku's in Europe, which should stimulate sales. And also 360 is winning australia weekly of course.

Finally, imo Europe is a domino that eventually will fall whichever way the USA does. Because of our similar software tastes and the fact most Western software development is based in NA.

So even if PS3 is eking out weekly Europe wins right now, the long term it will have problems.

360 is just too strong. I haven't even mentioned Halo3 and the rest of 360's killer lineup this year.

And I just have my doubts that PS3 can win Europe without winning NA. And it's pretty obvious PS3 is not going to win NA.

Doubtful unless Sony can keep its price well beneath the 360's. If a $100 price cut on the PS3 is only enough for a one month boost in sales against a competing console with a 20+% failure rate then that tells you there is a pretty grim reality behind the well-wishing hopes for the PS3 making second place.

Also, don't expect the abandonment of reverse compatibility on the 80gb PS3 to help its appeal. Can people live without PS1 games, sure, but if you think people will just give up their PS2 games, please pinch yourself and wake up.

I think it will be outselling 360 by more than 2.5 to 1 next year WW. Japan and EU just seam like they will be to much for the 360. We will see, good luck to the both of us.

To start. PS3 will eventually pass 360. Thier is no way around it.

The Playstation Brand is a lot stronger in EU than it is in the US. Sony has a lot of its first party studios in EU also. Like I said in another thread a lot of PS3 exclusives are the biggest in Europe. Games like The Getaway, Killzone, MGS, GT, Singstar, and Buzz are all huge franchises over their and cater a lot better to the audiance than anything made in the US.

The PS3 has Japan without a battle. As time goes on the differance between the 2 systems will only grow. Next year I expect the PS3 to be outselling it at 3X the rate it has this year (about 45K a week to 3k a week).

In the US the 2 systems have drawn tightly together. This winter MS should have the early lead with Halo 3 and Bioshock. I think PS3 will win November December, because Uncharted, R&C, Home, and Singstar are much stronger than Mass Effect. That momentum should continue into the start of 08. At that point Sony has the best lineup going forward, so it should start to really close the gap, but you rweally never know until it happens which is why this is all speculation.

Actually the System has continued to sell at a very similar rate even 5 weeks after its price cut. With a slew of exclusives coming over the next 3 weeks it should actually continue to get stronger. Also I don't think you fully understand the situation with the 80GB system. It will be able to play all the PS1 games the PS2 could play, and it will be 85% BC with PS2 just like the EU syatems are.

 Strange even Sony thinks that they will sell 11 million units by march 08. And they tought they'd sell 6 million by last march...

 I think that branding is becoming outdated. As we saw in America that an unknown (to me at least) brand Vizio took over the LCD-TV leaders Samsung, Philips, Sharp en Sony in 3 months. They are cheap and offer a decent television and consumers like it.
I think that that has to do with the fact that due to the high  complexity of modern electronics even large firms have to buy in components that they used to make themselves. So it is difficult to differentiate your product because everyone has access to it and existing products are not as good but not useless.

 The PS2 was hard to develop for, but since it sold as hell the developers just had to live with it. Since the PS3 sold badly we keep seeing signs of developers not even trying to make the products as good, let alone better then other platforms. Last year ports were looking the same, this year they are same but a bit inferior and it looks to me that there is no sign for any change.

 The Blue-ray device isn't as popular also (well the whole HighDefinition market isn't popular because they made is as easy to buy a HD set as it is to buy a graphics card: who the hell knows what "MSI NX8600GTS-T2D512EZ-HD" means). And from the Wii you can only say it has dated graphics, yet the graphics aren't fancy but decent and hey the PS2 is still popular and look at what graphics that machine has to offer. In the same context you can state that many games just come out on: Wii,PC,XBox360,DS,PS2. I mean... developers hardly care making a PS3 games and still firms like EA get hard critisism for their PS3 games while most others don't even bother trying. And the only negativism about the XBox360 is that it has a high failure rate, yet even that problem will fade away sometime and costumers don't even care as long as they have a replacement...just like many consumers turned in their PS3.

 I think the PS3 will be a bit like the GameCube, not a failure not a succes neither but just a decent console. Thanks to low sales and no game division in Sony we can expect that the amount of must-haves will be a bit lower. For the rest Sony can better start focussing on the PS4 and not keeping PR-shitting around for 9 more years about their years old Cell processor and a lifespan of 10 years.
As for the fanbase i would be thankfull that firms like EA even bother bringing stuff to the PS3, because if they once have to consider porting a game to the PS3 or the Wii ... the choise could be surprisingly easy next time around.
