The 80GB PS3 actually does only cost about $300 to make (remember it has 65nm everything, and Blu-Ray has dropped dramatically in price -- it was at $400 before the 65/65 switch and blu-ray drops), but the Nintendo cost-to-make number seems way too high.

:-O

...Sony isn't dumb, nor are they losing money on hardware any longer, I would wager.

ummm....so you believe a profit is being made on a single ps3 unit  ?

I said the PS3 probably costs around $300 to make. (actually I stated it as though it were a fact -- its not.  ...I'm just taking an educated guess, honestly)

Last I checked, the packaging, shipping, and retail industries all like to make money too.  I have no idea what Sony sells the packaged PS3 to retailers for.  However, I wouldn't be surprised if they are eeking out some profit.  I don't imagine it would be much.

Uh...Sony's still losing money on PS3s. But they still get money from the PS2/PSP/SW. But they're still in the red though. Not as bad before I don't think though.

Link?  See if you can provide... you know... a recent one, that addresses the Blu-Ray diode drops and 65nm GPU.

The division as a whole is not in the red, but since the PS3s inception, yes, they're deep red.

Sorry but on their last financial quarter they showed they were in red if they are making profits with every PS3 sold what is them making losing money?

"Nintendo rocked the gaming world when it brought out the Wii gaming console three years ago by turning an entirely new demographic of users on to gaming."

Nintendo's strategy is to buy inexpensive components instead of making them in-house, allowing the Wii to sell for $260 while the PS3 costs $300.

Oh boy, this dude obviously doesn't know anything about the industry.

Was the 80GB PS3, with the improvements I mentioned, present in that quarter?

How about the 160GB PS3 bundle?

wow....i'm wondering how much the wii(or even the 360) would cost to make if the ps3 is around $300

Exactly.  Back to the OT -- the Wii must be dirt cheap to make.  This article is a whole lot of BS, IMO.

The very idea that Nintendo has not also been improving their manufacturing process, and reducing their costs, over the last couple years is ludicrous.  It may cost less to make a Wii than it does to make a PS2 these days, by sheer volume alone.  Heck the PS2 has a DVD player (not that they are very expensive these days), and the Wii doesn't even need that.

The only way that Nintendo could not be way in the black on Wiis, would be by some really poor manufacturing decisions or issues.

Haha no way only $6 by now. Yen cannot have gotten so much stronger, it would be an economical armageddon.

Be heaps more. They would have made $6 (or more) at launch - 2 years ago. Be closer to $50 now.
