Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Square better be right about the "Last" Remnant

I think Infinite Undiscovery is unfairly maligned. Probably due to the fact that it wasn't what some expected it to be. They expected a targeted experience, and instead found a generalist approach. The game is designed to be played by a larger demographic, and be accessible to both. Doing so does mean there were compromises. Think more along the lines of a Japanese Fable 2, and you have a better measure of what Infinite Undiscovery offers.

not gonna lie, as soon as i saw the $29.99 price on Amazon i bought it, the impressions on neogaf are so positive, and they know whats good in the jrpg genre

@dodece I am going to borrow both Lost Odyssey and Infinite Undiscovery from my friends once I have enough time to play either of those titles. I'm quite sure I'll enjoy both of those titles more, but I will still finish and keep Last Remnant, it's still an RPG and I've played far worse for far longer.

@mrstickball I understand your points, but to me they should implemented chaining or level scaling, one or the other never both. Sometimes the chaining can even screw you on accident. One time I chained 3 monsters knowing I could handle the 3 chain, but at the last second a monster popped out from under the ground 3 feet away. As a result I ended up with a 4 chain that got me in a dead end situation. This is an RPG not a schmup I shouldn't have to memorize enemy spawn areas.

Also yes they give you 5 commands you can choose and it does speed up battle but at the same time sometimes the choice you need isn't there. For instance say you have 1,200 life, the monster union your fighting deals 600 damage, in order to win you'll need your lowest speed character to heal at the end or there's a chance that monster will wipe your union next round. Unfortunately since you have 1000 hp you're not gonna get the heal and attack command. Instead you'll end up with 5 different attack commands, so basically there's a chance you're screwed.

The triggers are random as well, the more morale you have the more trigger chances you get. If your lucky and get a parry trigger you can deal insane counter damage. Unfortunately since it's based on luck, even at full morale I'll dodge/block and not get a parry trigger for the longest time or sometimes get two in a row. I enjoy simple ideas that makes game play faster easier, but Square made the commands too simple to the point where I don't feel like I can control my characters. The connection I get with characters from RPGs comes from the ability that I know I'm controlling them, I really don't feel this connection in Last Remnant.

@Pbroy I currently have 12 units, 5 leaders, and 4 unions. I considered 3 but opted for 4 because it would allow me to have more strategies in my deadlock and influence morale more. Some of my strategies wouldn't work with a 2 union group. For example one of them is to begin the battle flanking another enemy group, doing so allows me to eliminate that union and gain more morale. Another strategy I do is to break a deadlock with union 1 that is hurt so they can run back and heal. At the same time I take union 2 and interference the group that was fighting group 1 allowing group 1 to heal without getting raid locked and gaining a little bit of morale.

@Ari_Gold I was planning on picking it up from Gamestop until Amazon had it at 40. 30 bucks is worth it, the game isn't horribly bad but I feel the game has some major flaws, for an RPG enthusiast it's worth it to play through. I just feel like the ideas and concept were poorly presented. I'd give it a 7/10, and give Famitsu haters a nod that they're right. Famitsu must've been playing a different game when they gave Last Remnant a 48/50.

Also anyone else not enjoying the story of this game? It's so lifeless to me and I don't think I'll ever develop a connection with any of the characters.

Last Remnant is a pretty good game.. its confusing at first and how they level up well..

If you use a lot of physical attacks then you will only level up physical stats and gain new attack commands.

its the same with spells, attack with magic attacks in battle and you will level up magic stats and gain new ones.

You will also have to learn to use formations as these help you in battle.

Sadly the game doesn't really tell you much in how to play I guess its just learn as you go along..

I agree with the enemy level scaling being strange.. not all enemies scale up.. some monster you encounter really early on in the game get really strong as you level up and return to them.. others just seem to just stay the same and become easier as you level up your battle rank.

Umm I have had no problem what so ever with bosses or asnything else so far and I have played for atleast 15 hours. hell I think it's way too easy already.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

FYI, Famitsu gave it a 38/40. They give 4 scores of up to 10 which adds up to XX/40 total score.

Some people would rather play games now, than live with the promise of "great games next year".

The main problem that you have is really that the balance of the game isn't right. The game doesn't have traditional level scaling. Often when you go back to a previous area you see stronger monsters thrown in. You have to test the mobs you haven't fought before to see how strong they really are before you start chaining.

I was a little frustrated at my first time in the sand cavern stage because I had to limit chains to 2 of pretty weak monsters, but now I have 3 unions with 5 people each and on trash I can chain as many as I can fit in.

Some of the most broken balance things I've seen so far are... mobs that call for reenforcements can spam reenforce, the dragon quest in the desert town (the dragon could oneshot me), the "cursing turkey" quest (curse kills the whole unit), and debuff spells doing a tremendous amount of damage (it works both ways from what I've seen).

I really like the game (I hated IU for reference), but it seems like it was rushed. The technical problems don't bother me at all (the game looks great), but the balance issues can be frustrating. I'm at a part in the game now (I just got 15 max battlefield people), where I'm kicking the sh*t out of everything.

There's a ton of combat in the game, if you don't like the combat you will hate the game.

@Waka how far along until you get 15 units and do you know if you get more? (you can spoil it for me the game story isn't going to interest me). Also I agree curses in this game are ridiculous! My party wiped one time from the cursing turkey quest near the beginning of the game. I tried it again and got lucky so I didn't wipe, but the first time the Turkey cursed 2 out of 3 of my Unions when I was allowed 3 unions and 9 units total.

I had no idea what the hell curse did, and I didn't have the skill to even cure it, so I just kept my union to attack. The second the round begins for those two unions each leader falls from the curse and the soldiers in each union become unusable. This is the beginning of the game and I had no idea this could even happen until after it occurs a little tutorial comes out telling you basically that union is screwed and so are you. The second time I try it with 12 units the turkey curses and only one soldier falls. This kind of stuff pisses me off, why are battle results so random and luck dependent?
