IMO i always thought that the Xbox360 was this gen's Dreamcast such that...

Dreamcast, launched a year ahead, used CDs like their previous gen the PS1 and Sega Saturn(which of course Sega's previous console the Saturn still used CD) and then the PS2 came out later with the new DVD disc format.

Except that MS learned from Dreamcast mistakes maybe? Last gen, devs disliked and felt the same about making games on DVD as they are with Blu-ray but give PS3 time as they did with PS2 and devs will quickly pick up.

A note to those Americans that thought the PS3 was too expensive at launch which might've made Sony lose alot of sales, i live in Canada and when the PS1,Sega Saturn,PS2 came out, they were all launched at 499$ so when i saw the PS3 at $499 and $599, it didnt suprise me (except at least it offers more then the prev gen). Just felt like the same routine Sony did with the PS2 which is all the more reason why i dont feel the PS3 as this gen's Dreamcast but the PS3 this gen is the PS2 last gen.

Your thread title is kinda confusing. I don't think it's fair to say the PS3 is the new Saturn/Dreamcast.

First of all it has already sold twice as many consoles as the Sega consoles did and Sony has far more resources and capital than Sega ever did to support it's gaming division.

The Saturn ports of the PSOne games were clearly inferior while the PS3 ports of Xbox 360 games are inferior in small ways while some games the PS3 had the lead development and (again in small ways) it showed. The Saturn was rarely the lead development platform and when some Saturn games were ported to the PSOne, the PSOne version actually looked better. The PS3 is like the Saturn in that it is more difficult to program for then the competition.

The Dreamcast used GD-Rom not CD's and unlike the Saturn was easy enough to programme for. Remember the Wii uses a optical DVD and is a huge success. I'm not sure where you get your information as I don't recall software companies having problems with the PS2 using DVD. I thought they lapped it up as they did CD's in the generation before (to replace traditional cartridge).

Time will tell whether the PS3 will pull back it's market share and whether the Blu Ray drive will have a significant impact on PS3 sales. Sony plan to make the PS3 a 10 year console but whether it will succeed is an entirely different matter. It has never attempted that before and previous generations are replaced every 5 odd years.

The PS3 can´t be "the PS2"...we´re going into the full 3rd year in this generation, and the PS3 is still in last place...in the same time frame, the PS2 had already left the Dreamcast and all the competition in the dust and never loked back, while the 360 is more than 6 million ahead.

Really, none of the current gen home systems looks like "a new PS2" in my eyes.

The 360 has a lot of games, a tendency to sell a huge number of titles, but lacks the hardware sales numbers the PS2 enjoyed.

The PS3 has even less games than the 360, and doesn´t have the HW sales its predecessor enjoyed.

The Wii boasts even better HW sales numbers than the PS2 in the same time frame, but lacks that huge amount of 'AAA traditional core' 3rd party titles the PS2 enjoyed.

So, the way I see it, none of these systems is the new PS2....I guess the only system that could come close to being a new PS2, right now, is the DS.

To the op, the lead platform will always have fewer bugs than the ported version by the time the code reaches you. That's the way it works.

this thread is so meh, and the ps3 does not have anything in common with the dreamcast

PS3 is selling better than the 360 was at this point of its life, and well the dreamcast wasnt priced at 400 dollars, and didnt sell 240k in one week excluding launch.

well dont be from what ive read its a pretty crappy and repetative job hunting bugs out, and replaying it to make sure bugs get removed after code update. that would kill gaming for me

Developers are just lazy. It was proved back in Nov 2007 with CoD4 that PS3 multiplats can be as good as 360 versions.

They just need to try harder, its not impossible.
