Forums - Nintendo - GT Invisible Walls: Wii, biggest turkey of the year.

Nintendo is doing fine providing content. It's just that they are only 1 company, an nobody is picking up their slack during down time. Any half way sane objective person can look at what the wii got this year, and what the HD consoles got this year and see a vast difference in both quantity and quality of 3rd party efforts. I mean, even Reggie admits it, but fanboys can't.

Those who fear the Wii must spread false rumors about Nintendo the its console to make themselves feel better.

They just cannot embrace the white-box-of-joy(tm).

Seriously though, it does seem like some people feel Nintendo is ruining gaming because they took a different tact and decided not to ruin the company by following Sony and Microsoft. It is just unfortunate that the third-party publishers have not embraced that there is more to life than HD consoles with brown-and-gray FPS games.

OK, that is over simplification. But Nintendo's only "error" was leaving an opening for its third-party partners to fill (after front-loading releases in the first half of the year) -- and instead they left the void virtually untouched.

I doubt Nintendo will not let that problem happen again.

Still though, those who only like one kind of gaming are not going to be happy with an alternative that is in the process of capturing half the market worldwide.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

U thought it was pretty fair. Maybe a bit harsh, but they weren't saying that the Wii is a total disgrace. They are just saying that from their viewpoint this is the weakest Q in Big N history, and I can agree with that from my 25 year gaming experience.

These "hardcore" gamers are so pathetic. It doesn't matter how much they kick and scream, they are not the only kids in the class anymore, and their tears aren't going to change that.

Hardcore gamers are like kids who used to be the only child, spoiled beyond belief, and were completely catered to. Now it's as if a new baby is born into the family, and all of a sudden that new baby is getting some attention as well, and the self-centered first child is furious that the world doesn't revolve around him anymore. So much so, that sometimes he tries to pretend his little brother/sister doesn't exist.

 Haha, exactly. Great analogy.

I think some people have to relax, they weren't saying the Wii is crap, they were saying in terms of a year, it was a turkey (dud year) which I agree with.

Sure Smash Bros and Mario Kart Wii were good, but when you think about the Wii and the other 2, you have to talk about exclusive as opposed to 1st party (Nintendo destroys MS and Sony), because exclusive (for which 1st party is a part of) accounts for some of the competitive advantage these consoles have with each other.

Even then, all they sad was this Quarter was the worst they've ever experienced with Nintendo, and as a person that felt Wii Music was a waste of Miyamoto development time and Animal Crossing lost it's flavour after the DS game, I agree with them, this Quarter was downright awful.

@CAL4M1TY: That's the thing. Objectively speaking the quarter isn't bad at all. It actually is pretty good. It only turns out to be a matter of personal preferences.
The way i see it, from personal preference standpoint, i would say that Wiis Q4 is better than the whole 2008 for PS360.

No. They said the Wii was the Turkey of the year, based soley on this quarter. Futhermore, they made dumb comments, like Nintendo's strategy is short term, comments that we said against the Wii a year ago, and still aren't panning out.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

By the standards set here, the Iphone is also doing better than the PS360. I mean damn, it's gotten an insane amount of casual content, it's probably killing the wii too. Just saying the hardcores are whiners that can't accept that casuals exist is a dumb ass straw man argument that hides the real issue; the complete lack of effort or interest in the wii as a platform for anything other that quick cashins and shovel ware. The Iphone is getting a ton of content too, but 500 different sudoku games isn't exactly quality or effort. Granted there are some cool ones like monkey ball, which we've all seen a hundred times, but maybe not the casuals right? It's all new to them.

Really, you can look at this one of two ways.

Option 1. The wii is competing with the HD consoles. Whenever Sony or Microsoft come out and say that they aren't competing with the wii, that they are targetting a different audience, they get lambasted by Wii fans that say they are just making excuses for having their asses handed to them. So let's assume that the wii is in direct competition for the same market as the HD consoles. It's library this quarter (and for much of the year) has trailed demonstrably...terribly if trying to compete for the same consumers. Owners of HD consoles have not had reason to be jealous. Do not argue this. Reggie the super optimist who is paid to blow smoke up your ass admits that third parties are putting all their effort onto the HD consoles. Nintendo is only one company and can't support the console themselves.

Or option 2. The Wii isn't competing with the HD consoles. A safe retreat to higher ground, and it's the spoiled hardcore gamers fault for not "getting it". Problem is, this is still a dumb ass argument. I have no problems with accessible (or casual as some call it) games. Look at my library, I have wiiplay, wii fit, boom blox, MySims, my wife and I actually used the co-op mode for Super Mario Galaxy. Accessibility is fine...but quick cheap cashins and shovelware crap isn't. I don't support "Game Party" or anything that replaces the letter "s" with a "z" at the end of a sentence. Nobody is going to argue the success of such games, but people will argue that these games are crap. Again casual doesn't equate crap, games with a budget of 200k and a six month development time that rely on the ignorance of the consumer equates crap. And the wii this quarter (and for much of the year) has had an abundance of crap and an extremely modest handful of gems casual or otherwise. That isn't a whiny hardcore mentality that wants focus on me, me, me as some of you have so condescendingly posited, it's a matter of wanting something of even remote quality. Sorry I'm not ignorant to buy "game party 2" this holiday season.

You can go ahead and make a game list of anything remotely quality that has been released in this past quarter, but don't. Seriously, we don't need to go down that road. Nobody is going to care about Mushroom Men.
