Forums - Gaming Discussion - Miyamoto doesn't like Haze's drug focus.

There is a study being done by someone trying to prove that playing violent games does not make you a violent person. Unfortunately he's had a bit of a setback in his research because the study of brain activity while people are playing violent video games has shown that it does cause a lot of activity in the area that applies to agression & violence. Now he has to prove that it's not directly an influence to acting out these agressions.

Actually, it's people who do think it's a factor have to prove it.  You can't prove it won't do it because of causation and correlation.  People who are violent more often then not perfer violent videogames.  Most people freak out and think that means that video games cause violent behavior... however isn't it more likely that violent people perfer violent videogames because they are infact violent?  Otherwise why would that predisposition be there already?

Of course when playing a violent videogame it's going to activate the violence areas of the brain.  It's also going to increase your adreneline as well.  Because you are doing something violent.  Playing sports is also going to cause a lot of activity in the your brain when it comes to agression and violence.  Anyone who's taken a biological psychology course should of already known this.  The thing is however videogames work as an outlet for violence, assuming parents teach their kids the difference between whats acceptable in a game and reality the kid should be fine.

To me it draws parralels how some people think porn creates sexual offenders even though pretty much all statistical evidence shows that increase in porn in an area actually leads to a decrease in sexual assaults.  The reason why areas that are REALLY big in porn have a lot of sexual assaults isn't because of the porn, it's because a higher number of "perverts" live there in the first place.

Without violent video games I would expect violence in this country from kids would increase.  Of course whether or not you need the level of gore some games have or if it was just more along the lines of death a game like Call of Duty has is more of an unknown factor.

The only reason you have psychologists supporting theories like this is most psychology students HATE statistics, ignore it and basically limp through it because they want to be clinical psychologists and they took psychology in the first place to avoid math.  Now they're clinical psychologists and like people like freud don't need to actually do scientific expierments and can just guess and spout of ideas that are more philosphy then they are psychology.  Often times it's to back up that it wasn't their fault, or their parents fault if someone they are counsiling does it.  Or even worse it's beause they don't want to admit some people are just born violent and can't be changed by only contained.  It really depends on which of the many schools of psychology the person decides to use.

Well that's not the only reason, there's also the ones who are doing it for the money/funding.

I love Nintendo to death but I would like to see Miyamoto do something like Haze/Halo sometime. It won't be pointless shooting, it won't be just puzzle solving and I want it to be gritty. I mean Samus and the Metroid franchise in general looks serious as hell. WHy can't Miyamoto create something similar but more shooting oriented?

Metroid Prime 3 Hype Level: Corrupted

1UP - 9.0

IGN - 9.5

It is a hardcore game through and through. You will get your ass kicked by bosses. You will be stumped by the sometimes complex, but never overbearing, exploration.

Someone tell me how Mario Galaxy reinvented Mario? It's the same game since the N64, now it's in space.

If anything Mario Sunshine was the one that reinvented the game and for the worse (imo) by focusing on the water gun and jetpack more than the usual Mario gameplay.

Also, Maverickhunter is another Gballzack account is there any way to ban IPs or something?

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Why do you expect Miyamoto to make such games? He does what he does best...let someone else make a FPS. Miyamoto didn't make Metroid...let the Metroid team make a new FPS...

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

There is a way to ban IPs but it's not very effective as anyone with half a brain can figure out how to change their IP and if they're using certain online services they automatically change everytime you sign online so you may end up taking out others with you.

Or atleast that is my understanding of the matter.

However, a game that has an E rating can appeal to adults too. For example: Wii Sports, Viva Pinata, and Mario. These are games that anyone can play, and that's what Miyamoto appreciates. He wants games that appeal to adults and children, not one or the other exclussively, and I believe in this respect he has been largely successful. If anyone really thinks Mario Galaxy is just a kids game, I pity them.

While M rated games do appeal exclusively to older players, not all E or T rated games appeal to a younger audience.

For example Zelda or Metroid would probably not appeal to younger players because they are too complex in puzzles and whatnot for kids to figure out.

This was a problem for a game like Viva Pinata which was supposed to be for kids but it has seriously so much going on at a time that there is no way a kid can play that and not have their head explode :)

The topic is fine, as it exposes Miyamoto for the hypocrite that he is!

I mean how many soldiers has link slaughtered on hid mushroom potion induced high?
And don't even get me started on Samus, mowing down space pirates while hopped up on "metroids"

:)

I know your post was in jest but Samus and the Metroid universe was created by Gunpei Yokoi not Miyamoto.

Come on!  "Return to Castle Bowser" would rule!  Mario FPS.  Fire Flowers instead of flame throwers.  B-bombs as wire guided explosives, all sorts of mario monsters coming at you during the single player (with co-op as luigi) as you battle through FPS versions of Boos and Goombas.  Hammer brothers everywhere throwing hammers at you, only to knock them out and take their hammers.  Koopa Troopas with some mario equivlent of a gun.  Snuffits (The gun Shy guys) attacking you at every corner.  Bullet Bills from bazookas.  Bananna peels instead of landminds.  Red homing shells.  Tanuki statues everywhre and Tanuki suit for camoflauge.

It'd be all sorts of fun.  How the mario weapons would have to operate differntly from FPS would make it stand out from other FPS.

Plus imagine how much it would freak you out looking for an opponent shell in hand, then suddenly you hear the magic star song playing and getting towards you louder.

yeah, so lets use a a wiimote peripheral that is a gun and shoot things......and while we are at it, lets innovate the wiimote into large clippers to cut somones head off.......this is one of the few times miyamoto has needed to take his foot out of his mouth. Especially considering the basis for mario revolves around the use of "mushrooms" to alter your "appearence" Its a videogame, keep making games and tons of cash and shut up.

Miyamoto needs to take his foot out of his mouth?  Don't make a big thing out of something that we don't even have a direct quote from Miyamoto or anything.

All we have is: Cliffy B dropped by to see Haze," Doak reveals in his column for the latest issue of Edge magazine, "he liked the drugs and the violence. Mr Miyamoto dropped by to see Haze - and he didn't".

Geesh.  It was a comment on a percieved personal preference, nothing more.

M rated games appeal exclusively to older players?  The guy who seems most pumped about Mature games is Leo-j who is apparently younger then 15.   That's about the age M stuff appealed the most to me as well.

Mature games can appeal to older players, but honestly are going to appeal the most to the younger teen demographic.
