Forums - Sales - Will PS3 beat 360 in WW sales for 2008?

If WW numbers are close or a draw, The American numbers could give the 360 the world wide win before the end of the year if the ratio from this year and last year holds true. I would suggest its better for the 360 this year than last year in Americas so its definately a possibility.

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 03rd Nov 2007 to 05th Jan 2008:

Console PS3 X360
America 1,380,959 2,221,898

theres your million right there =) 360 could do it

a few weeks to the New Year ...i doubt it for a 1 million gap, PS3 sales are really good against a 199$ system right now..to be sincere MS should be more worry about why they cant kill PS3 sales with such of low price. also ps3 has beter games  this holidays.

This is a hard one. There really isn't any more software thats coming out in NA and Others to push either system significantly, so it'll depend on how the 360 holds in Others. NA is a given, and I think the 360 can expect to close the gap here by 600,000 to 700,000. If the 360 can't outsell the PS3 in Others, it's not gonna happen. It'll have to offset 400,000 there and whatever lead the PS3 will have in Japan (though I expect that number to be small, since sales are so low and closer now, as well as Japan having a larger sales spurt in the beginning of January).

Honestly, I don't see it happening. Even though the 360 is outselling the PS3 in Others right now, I have a hard time believing they can keep ahead in weekly sales.

You are partially correct. Most software has released, however Resistance 2 will be released in Others at the end of November and considering Resistance 1 sold better in Others than America Resistance 2 could give the ps3 a decent boost in that region.

I forgot that one didn't see a WW release. I'm wondering how Europe got the shaft on that one, seeing as how the game got released in NA and Japan a month ahead.

Truth be told though, I kinda doubt it has much hardware pushing power. I still don't see the 360 beating the PS3 WW this year though.

Most likely due to localisation Europe tends to get games later compared to America and Japan. I agree to an extent that Resistance 2 won't be a huge hardware mover but it could boost sales 5-10K per week.

And getting back on topic the ps3 should outsell the 360 ww by at least 500k for 2008.

This is going to be a close call.

The 360 is closing the gap rapidly. the October USA NPD number were nothing short of stunning. November could be even greater with the monster GOW2 release and some Fable leftovers. December should see the boost from the casual buyers and here the low price of the 360 will play an even increased role when parents will choose the cheapest console for little Johny.

In "Others", the 360 continues to edge out the PS3 week after week.

A million is a large gap, but with the current rate it is plausible the 360 will close it.

So overall the 360 could win by a nose or the PS3 may hold on to a slim lead. 100K-300k either way. Virtually a tie.

That said, the numbers for the full year is good only for bragging rights. The more important numbers are the numbers just for Nov-Dec because these are the numbers that will set the tone for Q1 of 2009. The winner of Nov-Dec will get to carry its momentum to the next quarter. Here I think there is little doubt that the 360 is going to come out on top.

Prediction made on 11/1/2008:

Q4 2008: 27M xbox LTD, 20M PS3 LTD . 2009 sales: 11M xbox,  9M PS3

a mere 1,048,330?????????????

by my calaulations the PS3 will surpass the Xbox 360 in 6 or 7 years time if it keeps outselling the 360.

which of course it isn't, and hasn't been for the last 3 months. which means it would be much longer than 6 or 7 years time.
if 3 years have already gone for the xbox 360, and Sony says the PS3's life span will be 10 years. 3 add 7 makes 10....so basically by the time the PS3 outsells the 360, the cycle and wars for this gen will be well and truly over!.

I think its fair to say with no big PS3 releases in the future, there's not a chance in hell that the PS3 will catch the 360. even in this Credit Crunch where money is important, Sony's prices is too high!

The 360 can do it, what in itself is quite an achievement (!). A few months ago most people thought it was clear that PS3 would win this year.

The pricecut is well timed...

If we look at NPD numbers for October we'll see that 360 outsold PS3 180k.
Usually Dec:Nov:Oct = 4:2:1.
If this hold true than the difference for November will be 360k and for December will be 720k. Combined over a million.

So it will come down to Europe. I think PS3 will win in Japan, although not by significant (= >100k) numbers. If 360 can win Europe this holiday it will probably win the year.

@ Benga

Provided PS3 doesn't grow in units will 360 knocks it out of the park in selling units.

And twelve months ago, PS3 was dead. To even be in contention is good.

PS3 will keep ahead. Being the most expensive console, is natural that its holiday boost be relatively greater than other consoles.

But so far PS3 outselling X360 on the later's peak year is awesome haha
