Forums - Sales - Does anyone see any way the Wii will NOT win this gen?

I think the only way for any other console to even compete at this stage is to drop prices to Wii levels. If people had a choice between the consoles, price wise, then they may pick up the other consoles instead. Of course the drawback here is that the company losses would be incredible. Sure they may finally compete in terms of units sold and possibly break even in the future if they sold enough software but by when everything is said and done they may not see a single $1 in profit this generation if they dropped their prices to the $300 level. Furthermore, Nintendo is the only company that can actually drop their price and still make a profit on each system so if the others did drop to $300, the Wii could just as easily drop to $200 and still be breaking even.

To sum it up, nope its hopeless. The price differential made sure of that from the moment all consoles were released and many people knew it back when the 360 announced their price initially.

That doesn't matters in Japan, the DS and the PSP is around the same price in Japan, I think we will see the same thing with PS3 vs Wii. Simply because it is Wii that has Wii Sport.

I memory serves me, the PSP was around $250 at release vs DS at $150. Thats a very big difference especially when you consider that its a handheld but at least that sold and is selling decently well. The irony is that Sony didnt learn from that lesson and make the same mistake with the PS3.

The Wii simply appeals to a wider market including (oh the irony again) the most hardcore gamer who already has a high performance machine and wants a nice get-away from the norm.

What I was trying to point out was that the PSP now has the same price as the PSP. The PSP had actualy a quit good start, but it fell of when DS got some killer games. The same is true for the PS3, it doesn't have the games for the japanese market meanwhile Nintendo has the killer apps in Wii Sport.

Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!

I only see two scenarios where Nintendo does not take first place this gen:

1. Blu-ray takes off and PS3 becomes a popular choice for Blu-ray buyers.

I don't think this scenario is very likely, but it's not impossible. While it looks like Blu-ray has beaten HD-DVD, it still has to beat consumer apathy. I think for most people, DVD is still satisfactory. PS2 offered DVD at a time when it was obvious that DVD was going to replace VHS - that's definitely not true for Blu-ray vs. DVD at this time.

2. Nintendo stops disrupting the market.

The strength of Wii is in its ability to deliver new game experiences. The system isn't selling out week after week on the strength of Twighlight Princess or Super Paper Mario. It's selling out because of Wii Sports (and because of how the games play in general). If Nintendo cancelled Wii Fit and Wii Music tomorrow morning and went back to making the exact same types of games it did on N64 and GameCube, then I'd be worried. I'm actually a little worried that neither of those games are ready for this Christmas - Nintendo may be in danger of losing that new market it's trying to build.

But what else could they do after WiiMusic and WiiFit....WiiSports2 no one will buy that once the Wii series is gone and they cant make anymore then it will turn into the N64/GC and just be another Nintendo console with a different controller.

End of 2014 Hardware Predictions (03/03/14)

PlayStation 4: 12-15million

Xbox One: 7-10 million

Wii U: 8-9 million (Changed 01/04/2014 from 7-9 --> 8-9 million)

They can do pretty much whatever they can dream up ...

If you want to make a game for a group of people all you have to do is think of something they enjoy doing. As an example I have been in a position lately where I see how crazy many women get towards planning weddings. Hypothetically speaking, you could make a game where you start out by planning a wedding (Hall, decorations, food, ceremony, reception) and then the game becomes a tactical RPG where you're in controll of the Wedding party (minus the bride and groom) and you have to prevent the wedding from becomming a disaster; you end up being graded on how much of a success the wedding was for the bride/groom based on how it met their expectations and how many disasters you avoided.

I don't know how successful this game would be (and it is overly steriotypical) but I don't think anyone has tried a wedding simulator and I think it could be successful.

Construction games, firefighting games, photo journalism games, and political games have never (really) been attempted before. If I can think of dozens of ideas in minutes I'm certain other people can too and the limit are endless.

Yep dozens of ideas with a very small target audience and people who would rather do it in real life than on a screen in 'virtual reality'.

You know I said the exact same thing about "The Sims".  Which is odd... since I liked Aerobiz Supersonic... a game about the exciting world of running an Airline Company.

so last gen you could have predicted there would be a game about fitness, and a game where you simply play music in this generation... No one  can predict what Nintendo is going to come up with next because Nintendo is completely (and wonderfully) insane, and Wii sports 2 will sell like hell, especially in Japan, but also in the West (just has no hope of catching Wii sports 1 here)

i dont think the wii will at all. I believe the wii is a fade that will die away pretty. Everybody i know that owns a wii and myself all already getting preety tried of it. Its a fun party game system but it just doesnt have all the needed values of a great game system. I do think that it will still sell alot. Here is my predictions for the video game consoles sellings by the end of this gen

PS3----------56,000,000
Wii-----------48,000,000
Xbox 360---26,000,000

Predicted end of gen Results

PS3--------58,000,000  Ps3 takes the lead it late 2009 and never loses the lead again

Wii---------43,000,000 Wii fade starts to die out in summer 2008 and sales decrease

Xbox 360----27,000,000

Just like Wii Sports,  five mini-sports-games for a small sport symulation audience who don´t care about visuals. Oh wait that was just the most improtant game this far in the generation (and will stay that way), do you really think Wii Sports 2 with five extra games would not sell ??? Do you think Wii Fit will bomb and Nintendo will be left with no ideas ??? If you can´t see the potential of the new controlls I can see why you like the fad theory, but everybody (expecially HappySqurriel) with a vivid imagination can see that we are just at the beginning of new ways to make games and play them.

The game I would make right now is Wii-Snowboard(or Skateboard)-Brawl, stand on the Wii board like a snowboard, use the nunchuck to wack enemys who come to close or defend against them and shoot your opponents with a gotcha gun with the Wii-mote, the online and team play would rock.

The Sims (Doll House Game), Animal Crossing (Life Simulation), Harvest Moon (Farm Simulation), Nintendogs (Pet Simulation), Guitar Hero (Musical Game), DDR (Dance Game), Railroad Tycoon (Model Railroad Simulator), Sim City (City Simulation), and Civilization (History based Strategy Game) are all games created from ideas that had people claiming there was no value because they had a 'very small target audience' ...

Up until recently, who would have thought that a surgery or attorny game would be popular enough to justify their development costs.

I'm not saying that my game ideas are particularly good, but I would lay money that I could develop all of my game ideas for less than the cost of a mid-range PS3 and XBox 360 game and probably sell more games; someone like Miyamoto (who has created tons of games that were unconventional at the time) could probably come up with enough ideas to keep the Wii with a steady supply of unconventional games for years to come.
