Forums - Gaming - Left 4 Dead Public Demo Comes Out Today on 360 and PC!

I agree somewhat...I'm just gonna wait for the full game...it's 1.5 maps compared with the total 20 maps, as well as the versus mode, which might end up giving the most replay value.

Plus the customs of course.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

It's a pretty straightforward game.

Story-wise, everything is supposedly told through messages left on walls in the safe rooms between levels, and various clues scattered through the game, somewhat like Portal.

But no leveling up (good or bad, depending on POV), means the game can't consistently keep turning up the wick on the action unless better weapons are continually introduced.

While the game has dynamic difficulty adjustment with variations depending upon each new instance, it's not the same as making the game deeper as it progresses.

Could be more variety to enemies as well considering how many times most are encountered. Smoker, Boomer, Hunter, Witch, Tank and basic infected cannon fodder were everything shown in the demo.

At 20 levels of this, it should be interesting to see how the whole game pans out.

Sadly I don't think they will have any other enemis, unless they have an actual and real Boss monsters. However I do hear they will have 20-30 guns in the game and that might keep it kind of fresh. I'm honestly pulling for maps which are much broader than the ones we have seen where there are multiple, and I mean more than 3, and maybe have sections so you could do combinations of passages and what not. With the AI Director, a good map could last for a very long time if one will in this game.

Well I downloaded the demo and have to say after all the noise I was hearing about this game I was quite underwhelmed. It might not be fair on the game but rather a problem with playing a shooting game with a controller when I am so used to the Wii Remote. My nephew said the problem is the game is designed for PCs and so doesn't work well with controllers. Anyway definitely crossing this off my must buy list.

First reaction to L4D was awesomeness...but now after the 2 hours of playing the demo it got quite repetitvie. I sure hope that they provide some variety in gameplay...

well its only a demo at the end of the day although a huge demo as its a new ip and they need to show what the game is about.

i feel the game will be more geared towards online co-op play, a single player in this type of game will feel to arcady for many, but its looking to be a great game. hopefully the game does well

Graphics were nicer than I expected, character models are pretty good too. I still don't like the way you can see your allies through walls all lit up and ugly. I obviously understand why they've done it, but it still looks horrible.

Shooting mechanics work fine, although a zoom/sight option on the left trigger would've been nice. Horrible use of 360's horrible D-pad, I knew that would be a problem and it is. Nice addition of a fast turn around on the bumper.

I obviously love the premise of loads of zombies running towards you like something out of 28 days later, that's awesome, but I don't like how you can't move when you're being attacked. Friendly fire is annoying as hell because you need to get your shots off fast and it's easy to accidentally hit your friends because they suddenly move in front of your fire or because you can't see them amongst the zombies.

Longevity could be a problem. Firstly other than 18 additional maps, a few more guns and versus mode, the demo pretty much gives you everything the game has to offer. 20 maps isn't anywhere near enough, I don't care what anyone says about the Director or anything, that's just good tinkering around the edges, it doesn't disguise the fact we'll be playing through the same 20 maps over and over again.

Versus mode should add some lasting appeal and be really good, it'll be interesting to see how that balances out because combinations of super infected, or constant re-spawning of super infected, will easily be devestating when the survivors have limited health packs.

Wish list:

- Experience and a level-up system. They could've made an awesome level-up system where you unlock new weapons, health items and levels, and where your character gets stronger as you level-up.

- An 'Infinity' mode, where you just have to fight of constant waves of zombies for as long as possible, with each wave come more and mroe tougher zombies. And with each wave you're given fresh supplies and a short period of time to re-group.

I'm still keeping my pre-order for now. I'll play it a few more times and see how I feel after that. The lack of content and a leveling system could be a real problem though.

I guess I should do somoe damage control. First about the controls, I really can't say muchabout this since I've only barely touched hte 360 version of the demo in the other room, but they felt alright. I agree with the D-pad deal though. On the other hand the game was made for the PC. Friendly fire should not be a problem at all if you are playing with friends, also I noticed that the game had per pixel hit detection (or some really badass hit boxes) so you can even aim in between legs and arms, really cool. In the past few games with my established L4D group we had a total of 2 incidental team shootings. Also it only makes sense that you slow down when the zombies hit you, otherwise this will just turn into UT2004's Invasion mode, the point is to keep zombies away from you and not being able to run away once they get close to you. The melee shove also works wonders in this regards.

Third, about the maps. There are already maps being made by the community. I expect this title will have an astound amount of mod support and mapper support that will keep us nice nad happy with some absolutely brilliant maps. Over here we're already thinking of making a whole chapter based solely on our campus. There will be no reason why you should play only the same 20 maps over and over. Did I mention that mappers and modders work for free?

As for your suggestions. I absolutely HATE the level up/rewards system CoD4 and WaW have and the biggest problem I had, I absolutely hated that mechanic. In TF2 there are those weapons you get when you get enough achievements, but at least they have nice balances here and there, like 25% less dmg on natasha.

And infinity mode would be interesting, but how is that different than the actual game? You'd just be shooting hordes zombies in one spot instead of shooting hordes of zombies while moving through a level. You also can't have the zombies take more than 2, max 3, shots each since anything more and there are just too many zombies spawning than you'd be able to kill before they completely swarmed you.

This. Game. Rocks.

End of story.

Seriously, it has to be my most played demo ever.

Can't wait for the full game to come out.

Oh trust me man...in the 2 hours i played this I played with 3 other friends for an hour and a half. Its a multiplayer game...and its fun, but after a bit we just started team killing each other out of boredom. After that I started joining other games and killing my team... Team killing will be the funnest part of Left 4 Dead I think.

But yes, it is a demo...so no one should judge this...maybe the set pieces will have lots of variety with somesort of incentive to kill most zombies on the team between levels. Like if I get 10 headshots and everyone else gets 2...I want to start the next level with BFG.

What difficulty are you guys playing on? I find that on Expert there is more than enough zombie going around. More than there should be in fact. The only time I shot my friend in the face with a shotgun was when they all started pushing me around. Well also the time I tked him so that I could pass the level sooner without having to wait for him to die outside the safe room...

@Machina
I guess it is to each his own, but when I play a shooter I wanna hit the ground running and gunning. I don't want to have a WoW mechanics in my FPSes, let that stay in the RPGs. I blame Battlefield 2 for introducing this shitty mechanic and I will never be able to forgive it. Also the RE4 mode was less waves liek and a lot more, just survive the given time, sort of deal.

P.S. So I heard rumors that recreating any geographically correct locations can get you in a decent amount of trouble since it might count as a "terrorist" attempted attack. Anyone hear anythign about this? I'm dying to start shooting zombies on campus.

Oh there is plenty of zombies...but after a while, zombies don't really pack any punch. They don't really have weight (other than those big guys and hunters) and shoowing them by the 1000s feels unsatisfying compared to shooting a human player once and him saying "hey...cut it out!" :)

My favourite part was when one dude got sprayed on by those fat zombies(which attracts zombies to him)...and he got swarmed by 50 zombies. I waited till hes almost dead, and then helped him...but then I killed him anyways. LOL.
