Forums - Sales - The Big Boss: Resistance 2 sold about 1/4 of what Gears has sold in the week

mrstickball said:
....Why is everyone citing 500,000 in NA?

Gears did not sell 2,000,000 in North America. Gears 2 sold around 1,500,000-1,700,000 in NA alone (for the week) with the rest going to Others.

That'd put Resistance 2 at 375,000-425,000 for the week. A little lower than what everyone is throwing around.

FYI: Even if it sold 400k in NA, that's still great. I think Sony fans have their beer goggles on. Very few games do that well on the Playstation 3 for debuts, but have OK to good legs for most games. The PS3 isn't the X360. It can't move the kinds of units the X360 can on Day-1 due to attach ratios and buyer trends, but can make up (somewhat) for it by having legs.

I'd assume this will be the start of Resistance climbing to 3m+ worldwide, which is a very good number for a newer-esque IP.

ioi said R2 sales are between 300-500k, so it can sell 500k but i doubt it.

since when if something doesnt sell as much as gears does does it become a bomb lmao.

gears is a massive franchise, coupled with a starvation factor on the 360 release front this year it was bound to happen and u have to be happy for epic and microsoft as hey have put out a game that ppl want to play.

  • ninja gaiden
  • two human
  • banjo kazooi
  • fable 2
  • gears of war 2
  • L4d

^out of them lot if you had your most wanted purchase, given the 360 higher install base what game would you buy? id buy gears 2. so a massive opening week for gears 2 is very good and is in line with what was expected, i already posted in another thread, that u cant simply buy all the games that come out, u have to put off your least wanted and get ur most wanted, and for most ppl the most wanted will be gears 2.

resistance 2 launch week if u combine NA and others will also be very good just not as good as gears 2, if you take the install base % equivilant id say gears will still be ahead but not by that much

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

... starvation factor ... woooo the troll is not far ...

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

The XBox 360 makes people hungry confirmed! /jk

Maybe Gears 2 sold because of the Dude Huge factor.

Hope that the new CliffyB can rub his influence over God of War 3.

On topic:
C'mon guys, Resistance sold very well! Leave Gears 2 out of it!

Proud member of the Sonic Support Squad.

Dang you guys are harsh. 300 to 500k and getting this kinda response? Wow. Tough sales crowd...

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

people forget that Resistance is a franchise that has sold 3 Million WW....some coming through bundles.

It had to compete with Fallout 3 & LBP....yet came out with 500K Week 1 NA alone

In EU we know it can do better than that.

Since when is a potential 1 Million 1st week "disappointing".....have week 1 sales of MGS4, GTA 4, Halo 3, GEOW 2 made us a blind to the fact that you don't need a 3 Million selling 1st week to "not bomb"

@shanbcn

please tell me what YOU expected?

I was hoping for a Million... I expected Fable numbers... The series had the potential to be Sony's Halo, but they are so hung up on Killzone 2 it's retarded... if you had to choose between the two developers it's a no brainer... so why didn't sony go all out on this game? I should have seen ads for this as much as I saw Fable 2 ads at least if not quite as much as Gears 2. I hope it has legs... I'd like it to completely crush KZ2 by the end of the console's life. This is THE shooter on the PS3... IMHO anyway... and i think many of you will agree

Having played both Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 betas, I can assure you Killzone 2 is way better, the only thing that Resistance 2 has that's better is the co op campaign which is awesome, there's rumored to be a co op in Killzone 2, but that's not in the Beta now, I'm not saying Resistance 2 is bad, it's pretty good, but Killzone 2 is just one of those games.

3 Xbox 360 games have sold over 1 million copies on it's first week this year. How is that a 'starvation factor'. Better yet, why don't you tell us how the heck the Xbox 360 can launch so many high-selling games, and be starved?

The X360 shipped Mercs 2: World in Flames, Rock Band 2, The Force Unleashed, Saints Row 2, Fable 2, Fallout 3, Fifa 09, Dead Space, Pro Evo Soccer, and now Gears of War 2 - All of which are million sellers (or going to be before they run out of steam). How is that being starved for good games? How many million sellers has the Playstation 3 sold since September?

And as of today (not including Gears, even), the X360 has had 2 confirmed million sellers since September - Fable and TFU, to 1 Playstation 3 game (Fifa 09). If anything, the Playstation 3 base is starving for good games, not the X360.

People get way too hung up over the big first week numbers.

In case this wasn't brought up before, let me show everyone the sales of a certain game:

Total Sales 0.13m 1.86m 1.70m 3.69m
Week 1 32,205 233,341 179,100 444,646
Week 2 17,387 109,171 100,418 226,976
Week 3 12,307 73,192 70,694 156,193
Week 4 8,433 59,930 75,343 143,706
Week 5 7,656 86,766 82,008 176,430
Week 6 6,789 125,281 111,976 244,046
Week 7 5,115 142,125 159,288 306,528
Week 8 4,049 84,849 93,618 182,516
Week 9 3,062 44,401 55,321 102,784
Week 10 2,663 36,076 39,868 78,607

The above numbers are from CoD4, the second best selling game on the PS3. I've been saying this for most games that have come out recently: there's really no reason to whine about its sales until the holidays pass. If it can sell anything like CoD4 does, it's fine. I still think it will pass the first Resistance in sales.

If you were expecting this game to outperform Gears, you were setting yourself up for a disappointment.

Lol this is what Leo J said about that game:

I dont know if it will make it to 1 million , I hope it does.

That's just as a retarded argument as the post you were quoting, considering most of the games you listed are available for both systems.

The reason the 360 games sell more are:

1) Twice the install base in NA and 6 million lead on the PS3

2) A lot of multi console owners prefer buying games on the 360 for various reasons (achievements, friends are on Live, etc..)

It's that simple.

My point was if you wanted to play *that* game of consoles being starved for games, the X360 has more games that came out in the past 3-6 months than the Playstation 3. I don't think either is starved, FYI.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but:

1) The Playstation 3 is tied in Europe (or about that much), and has a hefty lead in Japan. Why aren't you taking either into consideration? That's called cherrypicking.

2) How many PS3 and X360 owners actually have the other system? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last survey I saw put multi-console ownership below 20%. How the heck is 20% going to effect it that much, given the fact that said 20% isn't going to swing to the X360 100% of the time. Even if they were twice as likely to buy a game for the X360 than the PS3 (that's multi-plat), that'd increase sales by a whopping 4%. And that's assuming that said 20% all own a PS3 and X360, and no other combination (for all we know, it'd most likely be around 10% total, which would reduce your argument to an overall effect of 2%)

The real answer is:

Playstation 3 owners don't buy many games games (Attach Ratio = 5.3 globally) compared to a X360 owner (Attach Ratio = 8.1 globally). If one console's average owner buys 50% more games, your going to sell more. Add in a 33% lead in hardware sales, and it's a recipie for much larger sales for most every title.
