Forums - Sales Discussion - Is it just me or for all the Wii hype do the PS360 sell more software?

I mean, lets look at NPD months for an example, the fact is an Xbox 36 game is usually #1. NOT a Wii game. I mean Wii has more sold hardware in USA than 360, and that hardware has massively more newer users than 360 since all it's sales are in the last 2 years versus 3 years for 360 (newer owners buy more games).

Shouldn't a Wii game be number 1? But no, almost always a 360 game. August: Madden 360. Sep: Star Wars FU 360, Oct: Will be Fable 2 360. November: Will be Gears 2 360. December: Unsure, could be Gears 2 again or a Wii game imo.

Now lets look at some week 44 most recent PAL charts

Now the UK charts may say otherwise but there's on trend here, the majority of these top 10's are PS2, PS3, PC, Xb360, anything but Wii games. Wii usually charts just one or two in the top ten. Not befitting the monstrously popular hardware imo.

I imagine Japan charts actually look the same, 8 of 10 this week will be Ps3, 360, PS2, games, even though those games sell anemically in Japan they still probably take 7-8 of the top ten slots versus 2-3 Wii games.

You're actually quite wrong about Japan. Like, REALLY wrong (360 games rarely make the Top 30, and PS3 games are hardly more abundant).

You've also taken a nice snapshot of one week, and projected it as a generalization. We know the Wii moves more software than the other two systems, even if it rarely takes the top slot. Kind of makes one think this week is anamolous...

And yes, let's talk about NPD, and how the number of Wii games in the Top 10/20/30 has been increasing steadily, to the point where it's often half the top 30. Granted, it's rare for it to take the top spot (that's a 360 game), but then its games also tend to last more than a month. I'm pretty sure publishers don't mind that tradeoff...

Yes, the PS3 and 360 combined do sell more software than the Wii alone. Yes, the HD consoles have had more big-budget releases than Wii has lately. And no, top ten lists don't tell you what overall software sales are like.

There you go.  Wii sells more 3rd party software and obviously a ton of 1st party stuff (WAY more than Sony or MS 1st party).

Difference is HD games tend to sell very strongly at first and drop off.  Where Wii (and DS) sell consistantly for a loooong time.  Look at Wii Fit sales (almost matching Wii sales week after week in all markets) or Nintendogs on DS.

Edit: Chart lovingly ripped from Rolstoppable's post in another thread - thanks Rol.

Where have you seen an NPD top 30? I'd like some proof of your assertion that half the top 30 is Wii games!

Okay what is the USA install base of PS3, Wii, 360?

If PS360 combined are similar in install base to Wii, but they sell 50% more software (as the data posted so far suggests) that seems notable.

Combined sure they sell more software. And sides your limiting this to UK only... (Going by stats in OP) So that really should be in the title... (Or editing to add stats later is planned??)

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.

Currently the PS360 hold about 55% of the hardware market. It was 61% at the start of this year.

But this point isn't really as interesting as you make it out to be. Consoles which sell less hardware usually have a higher software attach ratio.

Well the HD consoles are getting much more big budget games. And these games are always very front loaded. Even if Wii Fit never got to number 1 in the US (I know it did but just saying if) the fact of the matter is it will outsell every single game on PS360 including games that sold 2 million week 1. So to look at what is at the top of the chart and use that to determine what sells is a ridiculously inaccurate approach.

Wrong. No console in history has ever proved it.

The Playstation 2 (highest selling system of all time) has had a global attatch ratio of over 10 software units to 1 hardware unit. The Gamecube didn't even reach that.

If anything, it's the inverse: A console that leads usually has the better attach ratio since software titles are more abundant, and as the system has a longer lifespan, it gets a better attach ratio, since users still have a reason to play on the old system.

Even the DS is breaking away from the standard handheld mold thanks to the overwhelming support the console has received. Normally, handhelds move a mere 5.0 software units when they are lucky. According to Nintendo (and someone can correct me on this if I'm wrong), the DS has already moved 500,000,000+ units of software on 80,000,000 Nintendo DSes - which would be above a 6.0 attach ratio.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
