Forums - Sony - We need a price cut now SONY!!!

After March 31st 2009 is when I expect $299 PS3. This year, they need to profit as much as possible.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

I fully expect Sony to roll out a $299/299EUR model this autumn - this is the magic price point, the inflation-adjusted equivalent of $199 in 2000 dollars, where mass demand really takes off. Their cost reduction machine is running smoothly, so they won't be taking a big hit on the hardware.

Sony has been carefully preparing for this moment. Not only do they have a blockbuster roster of software available for the holiday season, ranging from MGS4 to LBP and R2, but BluRay has taken off, HDTVs are affordable, and the PS3 has become a true next-gen media hub, thanks to TV and movie downloads, trophies and multiplayer, and user-created spaces like Home. This holiday season should be spectacular...

they simply can not afford to do it... it would cause too much cacaos in the investor poll and might even lead to a shake up, its simple they promised they wouldnt to stock holders and they need to stick to it, even if they loses market share, after this year they can make a major cut and try and roll next year, its part of the reason they only set 10 mill as the goal so they could beat it, and restore confidence then go out on a limb and bet more for the next year.

I have posted my thoughts on blueray in other threads, yes i think it will do well this year, but next winter will be the first true winter of blueray, hd tvs are still just a bit out there, and i feel the digital switchover in 09 will speed things up

I read part of your little speach and I dont need to read the rest of it, or any comments. This may have been said and im sure it will be said again.

SONY CAN NOT CUT PRICES! They are already lossing tons of money on each system sold. They are aready in the hole 300+ million dollars (just Sony's gaming div BTW). Thats more than the PS2 made in total profit! If you want to complain know your facts first. I myself would like Sony Games to stay for the next generation just to give Microsoft and Nintendo some compatition. If you want Sony to lose so much money they dont even consider doing the next generation Playstation then by all means bitch to your hearst content.

you do know sonys gaming division made a crap load of money dont you? and they are indeed not losing tons of money on each system sold, more likely around $1-100 per system sold (my opinion around $35 lost per system)

Ok so explain this one, dated may 2008... what money???

I hope you guys aren't holding your breath. Sony is not doing a price cut this year. They have publicly announced this several times. They can't afford to keep losing money per console like they have been.

Maybe they'll do a 10 buck price cut just to keep people happy.

A price cut would definetly help.

SONY should do a $50 price cut early next year (March say -- inline with Europe launch).

An 80gb PS3 for $349 will help SONY in sales without ruining their hope for a profit.

Ohh and i wonder how Microsoft is coping with the recent 360 price cuts ? Are they still making money per console?

Sony needs no price cut this year. Not only do they not need it due to financial reasons, but also because, they have software to move consoles. Sony it set for the rest of the year. The only thing they have got to do is market the stuff that they have ready to go. Little Big Planet, could be the biggest title of the holiday, but Sony has got to make that happen. Games do not sell themselfs. If the mainstream does not know a game exists then you might as well forget about even selling it. Sony has been selling games to fanboys for to long, and they have got to change that. Make people know of LBP and Sony has a fighting chance this year, send it to die like every other Playstation exclusive, and they can sit in third place, because a company that throghs up a 5 dollar add for a game with this much potential deserves to be in a worse off situation than both Microsoft and Nintendo.

So, No price cut. Market LBP, Market Home, Market Blu-ray PS3, people will not buy a $400 dollar games system unless you show them why it is $400 dollars, and they can see the value in it. To this point ony has put themselves into 3rd by letting people be uniformed, and not making the system stand out in any way. That is why price does not matter, if people don't want a $400 PS3, then why the hell is a $350 PS3 going to look so much better?
