In some regions they have shortages, Italy for example (I can't imagine them selling only 2k in their bastion).

His shortage excuse was real, I believe, but its more due to the fact that PS3 boxes are so much larger than the competitors, that retail stores always have to carry less of them. In other words, your typical retailer only has 6 PS3s on the shelf (or whatever) at any one time, when there are 9 Xbox360s (in 3 SKUs), and 10 Wiis. I'm sure the in-store, and external warehouse has similar amounts of space devoted to the consoles.

Its easier for a retailer to run out of PS3s than the other two consoles, so yes... the PS3 is often missing from the shelves (as is the Wii, for obvious reasons, but not the 360... until lately).  I believe JackyT (lol) is referring to the fact that larger numbers of smaller orders are probably being made constantly due to this restriction, and shipping probably can't keep up, rather than production.

I believe the PS3 is experiencing shortages. PS3 usually sells around 150k per week.

For the most part it's just Sony's excuse for poor sales. They bragged about their manufacturing process early in the PS3's life, and this may be their downfall; they are clearly capable of making far more than they are selling. So either Sony is engineering a shortage or they're grasping at straws to explain away their sales and hope no one notices.

There is no way there is a shortage constraining sales. I also feel a price drop won't make sales "go crazy" but will help boost sales over the 360, for a time, nothing too lasting though.

In my opinion there would need to be something very extreme done to have a lasting effect on sales and consistantly put it over the 360. In all likelyhood, the PS3 will not consistantly outsell the 360 until MS releases the next XBox.

The PS3 isn't selling less, the 360 is just selling more.
Any more price cuts will put Sony in the red. It's not like they make each console for 5 bucks.

I think you are reading too much into his statement. Tretton isn't saying that there currently is a shortage and he is excited that currently the PS3 is trending 30% higher than the 10 million shipment number for this fiscal year.

I don't think there will be a pricecut this year. In fact I would be surprised to see a cut before mid-2009. Sony is focused on profitability and they won't sacrifice it to increase market share.
