His shortage excuse was real, I believe, but its more due to the fact that PS3 boxes are so much larger than the competitors, that retail stores always have to carry less of them. In other words, your typical retailer only has 6 PS3s on the shelf (or whatever) at any one time, when there are 9 Xbox360s (in 3 SKUs), and 10 Wiis. I'm sure the in-store, and external warehouse has similar amounts of space devoted to the consoles.
Its easier for a retailer to run out of PS3s than the other two consoles, so yes... the PS3 is often missing from the shelves (as is the Wii, for obvious reasons, but not the 360... until lately). I believe JackyT (lol) is referring to the fact that larger numbers of smaller orders are probably being made constantly due to this restriction, and shipping probably can't keep up, rather than production.
