Forums - Sony - Playstation lifetimes...

Let's look at the lifetime of every Playstation. The original ran from 1994/1995 to 2005, roughly 10 years, and sold over 100 million- 102 to be exact. Now, I watched as the origianl ran WELL into the lifetime of the PS2. The biggest way Sony was selling the original while the PS2 was out? They bundled them with a screen, shrunk it, and sold it as one great combo for only $50! This of course may have been how stores sold unwanted bundles too. Anyway, it sold 100 million over 10 years. The Playstation 2 debuted in 2000. It's still alive today, and I still see it in store shelves right next to the PS3. Good idea, bad idea? I'm not too sure, but I think if Sony REALLY wants to see an increase in sales of the PS3, they should think about ending the PS2 soon, and focus JUST on the PS3. The XBox is dead. The GameCube is dead. Why is the PS2 still alive? It's clearly won that generation hands down. The only thing remaining is Sony wanting to lay claim to having sold 250 million systems in only 2 generations- which is why I think the PS2 will STILL be around next year! That's good and all that, but they are really losing this generation to BOTH XBox 360 and Wii. The PS3 lifetime sales are a joke among internet uses everywhere. How can this thing only be 1/2 the lifetime of the Wii when they BOTH debuted in November 2006??? It's because Sony wants to keep raking in as much money as they can on these things, and the CEO of Sony said the PS2 lifetime will be longer than the original's lifetime. That's 10 years plus! They want to keep the PS2 alive into 2011? WHY? WHY, WHY, WHY? Just end this thing, let stores use the PS2's shelf space for PS3. They are making so many mistakes on this third generation that it's no surprise why this thing's sales are only 1/2 the sales of Wii.

Ps2's still make money. Sony likes money.

2 things.

They still make money off of the PS2, which actually pays for a lot of the costs of development for the Playstation 3.

Also, there are a lot of people who haven't switched over to the new generation whether it be because of price or because they simply haven't gotten around to it yet, so they are keeping the PS2 alive so that people will have that time to transfer over.

Eventually, I do think it will be possible for the PS3 to crack 100 million but not in the next few years. That wasn't a "fanboy" response. It was a simple observation based on the fact that the Playstation series tends to sell "decent" for the first few years and then will get a push.

Yes,Yes,Yes and Yes

You are making assumption that those buying PS2 now would automatically buy PS3 if there wouldn't be PS2. This is definitely not true. Those buying PS2 are buying it either because if price or game library or both. Those who are buying it because of price would likely choose 360 or Wii if there wouldn't be PS2. So discontinuing PS2 now could actually increase 360/Wii sales even more than PS3's.

Sony has to have thePS2 on the shelves. It is what has allowed them to sell as many PS3's as the have to this point. If Sony were to drop the PS2 they would begin loosing tons of money every quater. Without the PS2 Sony would be in serious financial trouble.

Even without money involved PS2 is still a great device, and millions of people buy it every year. The system still helps expand the gaming audiance, and it is targeting a much differant crowd than PS3.If Sony were to pull the PS2 that would be sales for Nintendo and Microsoft. People looking at a 129 PS2 are not going to get a 399 PS3 just cause PS2 is gone. Those people will be picking up either a Arcade 360 or a Wii.

We all need to understand that the PS2 still being on shelves is a good thing for Sony and consumers. The fact that it continues to sell this well is even better news. This shows that Sony and third parties are willing to support a console long after it is out of its prime. So if you are not hot on going out and getting a next gen console right away, at least you can count on good games to sttill find there way to the platform. It also shows that we didn't necessarily need the next gen consoles yet. IMO this is the best thing the PS1, and PS2 have showed. I hope that if the current gen consoles can all stay near eachother in sales that we don't see one company jump to the neext gen to early. I would love to keep on getting great games on these consoles as long as we can keep tapping more potential. Lets wait to start a new gen tell it can be somthing really special and at $499 or lower for a starting price point.

CONCLUSION: PS2 still on the market is a good thing. It does very little if anything to effect the sales of PS3. The PS3 will do fine with the PS2 on the market once it see a price cut, and a consistant flow of exclusive software (the later starts next week). Seeing the PS2 on the market doing this well could lead to this generation lasting longer than past generations. This could help make the shift to next gen a bigger leap, and a much easier transition.

A lot of people wont switch over. The PS3 is too expensive and lacks a strong enough library of games. It lacks in what the PS2 did well in. These consumers are more likely to go to the Wii, the PS2 of this generation.

Killing the PS2 will do nothing but sever a lifeline for Sony. They need this money if they want to try and keep the unstable game branch from tumbling over. Even if they PS3 wasn't losing money, it would be a bad business decision to discontinuing a product that was still making money.

PS2s rock. And they will continue to rock as long as there are used PS2 games for sale. They're little, they play DVDs, they play audio CDs, they play loads of great games.

PS2 games do not suck, even by todays standards. I would even go as far to say that a PS2 is still a serious impediment to the Wii's growth -- more installed base than new sales, of course, but its still holding the Wii back somewhat, in my opinion. Some 50% of PS2 owners haven't purchased *any* next gen console, to date, according to NPD.  The PS2 install base continues to grow nearly as fast as the 360's does, believe it or not.

Until a cheap, slimline PS3 replaces it, AND Sony brings back BC, in 100% software form, you can expect the PS2 to keep on going. Frankly, I'm glad. If my PS2 dies, you better believe I'm buying another one! I have a LOT of awesome JRPGs to finish. =)

the wii doesn't have the library ps2 had it will sell to new consumers (casuals that don't play hardcore videos)

those games are going to be split between ps3 and 360

ending the PS2 ??? you mean end the PS2 and focus on the PS3 to lose more money ?? that makes no sense at all

why is the PS2 still alive ??? because the appeal is still strong among alot of people !!

SONY is money hungry that's why they are still keeping the PS2 on the market ?? yea, thats right ,to make up for the loss of money due to the PS3(which is not bad )

wii was sold at a profit of $13 in japan,$50 in usa, and $79 in europe during launch...imagine how much they make now (as the wii cost $200 to build at launch)..........is SONY really money hungry ???? think twice !

you sadly FAILED with this thread.....it is pathetic
