You are making assumption that those buying PS2 now would automatically buy PS3 if there wouldn't be PS2. This is definitely not true. Those buying PS2 are buying it either because if price or game library or both. Those who are buying it because of price would likely choose 360 or Wii if there wouldn't be PS2. So discontinuing PS2 now could actually increase 360/Wii sales even more than PS3's.
