Sony has to have thePS2 on the shelves. It is what has allowed them to sell as many PS3's as the have to this point. If Sony were to drop the PS2 they would begin loosing tons of money every quater. Without the PS2 Sony would be in serious financial trouble.
Even without money involved PS2 is still a great device, and millions of people buy it every year. The system still helps expand the gaming audiance, and it is targeting a much differant crowd than PS3.If Sony were to pull the PS2 that would be sales for Nintendo and Microsoft. People looking at a 129 PS2 are not going to get a 399 PS3 just cause PS2 is gone. Those people will be picking up either a Arcade 360 or a Wii.
We all need to understand that the PS2 still being on shelves is a good thing for Sony and consumers. The fact that it continues to sell this well is even better news. This shows that Sony and third parties are willing to support a console long after it is out of its prime. So if you are not hot on going out and getting a next gen console right away, at least you can count on good games to sttill find there way to the platform. It also shows that we didn't necessarily need the next gen consoles yet. IMO this is the best thing the PS1, and PS2 have showed. I hope that if the current gen consoles can all stay near eachother in sales that we don't see one company jump to the neext gen to early. I would love to keep on getting great games on these consoles as long as we can keep tapping more potential. Lets wait to start a new gen tell it can be somthing really special and at $499 or lower for a starting price point.
CONCLUSION: PS2 still on the market is a good thing. It does very little if anything to effect the sales of PS3. The PS3 will do fine with the PS2 on the market once it see a price cut, and a consistant flow of exclusive software (the later starts next week). Seeing the PS2 on the market doing this well could lead to this generation lasting longer than past generations. This could help make the shift to next gen a bigger leap, and a much easier transition.
