@groucho

Drop off's don't happen magically, nothing is left to chance, cause and action is a principle rule in business, their is no black void that just selects a given point to be the drop off point.

I'll apply some logic to your analogy about toys dropping off on their second christmas.

Cabbage Patch brand sold and ruled the christmas season for two years until they were out manuvered by Tickle Me Elmo, now why is that?

Did magic make the Tickle Me Elmo become a new fad?

It's not your fault for the misunderstanding though.. some words shouldn't be given definition regardless of popular cultures acceptance of them: FAD is one of them.

@Soriku

Which is very true, it works hand in hand really - part of the reason for HD graphics and Cell processors is because as consumers get older they require more bang for the buck in a sense, they demand more reason to purchase these consoles, that's why we can safely call the PS3 a media hub, while kids demand to have fun.

The reason why I didn't slap fun and Wii together is because fun is subjective and the Wii isn't fun - it's a console.

The reason why the Wii seems like it's a step back is because based on the original direction of consoles Sony has been going in the wrong direction since day one, they used the tried and proven formula from the get go though, software sells hardware.

For a prime example of this look at Microsofts Xbox360, the figures would look very similar to the PSX for the XBox360 should the PS3 and PSP and PS2 not exist anymore on the launch of the 360.

By now they would have been in the 40 millions install base.

@Soriku&dib8rman: Umm... Not quite. The reason for the popularity of Mario and Pokemon is, that they appeal everyone (not target kids). If kids were the target, the games would be very different.

@dib8rman: When i started gaming with NES (well, my friends C64 actually, but NES was my first gaming machine), it all started in my life. My friends loved the system for its great and fun games (and its quick start) and started to buy their own NES:s. After that, some of the C64 owners started saying how bad NES was and how much better C64 was because you could write your own programs with it (and all i wanted was to play games, just like everybody else with NES).
Next thing to happen was The Great Gianna Sisters in 1989, from which (as i was told) Nintendo was copied from (i pointed them out that Nintendo is the company, NES the system and asked why SMB is four years older, Nintendo copied Gianna Sisters four years in advance?).
Then someone got a Megadrive and bought into the "does what Nintendon't", "blast processing" and other Sega PR BS (i played quite a lot with him with his Megadrive). That lasted until SNES came out.
And then, one jerk got state-of-the-art 100MHz Pentium (he always wanted a console but his father didn't get him one, so he propably got the PC for other purposes than games) and started to send me letters through my cousin "why do you prefer SMW and LTTP over Phantasmagoria". I had never even heard about the game before, so i went to him, played Phantasmagoria and told him why it sucked.
Next thing to happen was PSX coming to market. I was literally amazed and couldn't think of any reason why people bought the system when it had literally nothing but shovelware. Then it sometime after struck me, all the hate towards the NES was because of how different the system and its games were compared to what the people, who had previously played games were used to.

You may get the wrong impression, but i have only wanted to play and enjoy games, not argue about them. The games forums i'm registered into, i've registered only for the info i can get there, came to VGC for the sales numbers but since the forum had so much sane people and people who seemed to know their business, i decided to register and take part for the conversations.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

@Soriku: Yes and no. By targeting kids, you may be able to get lifetime customers, but that is possible only if the product itself appeals to the kids when they grow older.
Let's say that when you start, you're able to tap 20M kids. Time passes and after 10 years, you're able to tap 20M kids again, but now you face a problem; what to do with the 20M kids, who are now teenagers. You have tapped 40M market, but you may not be able to tap but half of the crowd, unless your product appeals to both.
Let's now look at what Nintendo tries to do:
They try to tap the kids market.
They try to tap the teens market.
They try to tap the adults market.
It's no wonder that Nintendo isn't as strong in the teens market, as it is among the other two, since it's the group that has grown up with the Playstation and they recognize the PS brand the best, while Nintendo captures the kids with it's games that appeal to them and the adults (to an extent) have grew up with Nintendo.

Now what Sony is after, is that they try to move up with the crowd that grew up with the PS brand, but their problem is, that when Sony entered the games market, they captured the audience that had grew up with Nintendo and Sega and who are now between ages 20 to 30, they are building up their families, raising their kids etc, which means that their disposable income (and time) to games is secondary in comparision to their families. And the teens group? It's the most lucrative market Sony can tap right now, but it faces its worst competition from music, booze and clothing.

Just got through with the video. He's definitely put a lot of thought into this, but that's about it.

A lot of things he mentioned that happened in the past are much different now. Several of the companies he mentioned aren't just starting out like they were back then either. The demographics have basically mixed with several different tastes as well. For one thing, comic book fans are much different in ratio to video game fans. The "hardcore" of comic book readers almost completely stay away from other types of comic books as opposed to the "hardcore" of video gamers who will usually try out several different types of games. While it's possible to lose much more money off of video games when you're a video game company, it's also possible to make much more than a comic book company.

This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*

i think that nintendos stratergy orgrabbing kids does still apply yo teens. I mean i still pretty much play the same games i did then(to an extent). people act like aiming for kids means having cutsie characters like spyro or crash bandicoot or whatnot. when i was 8 i wasnt playing these i was playing zelda. and i still do 9 years later. likewise the same can happen for other franchises such as GTA
