MK has probably the broadest appeal of just about any game. It's one of the few games I can have just as much fun playing with my 5 year old nephew as my gamer friends. How many games can you do that with?

Mario Kart Wii will join SMB3 and GTA:SA(PS2) among standalone, single platform, home console games to have sold at least 17M units.
Honestly. The lifetime over/under has to be pushing 20M by now. MK DS is going to sell 15M, and NSMB is going to sell 20M. And here's how those three games compare in early sales...

mario kart wii will pass the multi plat games, its still sold out in most of the world
Unincluding the Wii series, it's looking like Mario Kart is the winner this gen. It should continue to sell throughout the Wii's lifetime, pretty much - at the very least matching Gran Turismo 4's sales.
GTA IV and Brawl may be the fight to look out for - assuming Brawl's legs can stay strong & GTA's weaken, it may get close in time. Unfortunately, Brawl's legs may only be strong in America - If I had to guess, I'd put my money on GTA.
As for Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, and CoD 4, their sales will get high no doubt, but sequels for each of the games will hurt them. Therefore, I don't think they have the potential the other games have.

Of course, possible sequels to those titles like CoD 5 or a possible SMG 2 will have a shot at the crown as well, though it seems that usually the first game on a new platform sells better than the second intallment. NOTE: I'm only talking about home console sales here, if we take in handhelds, things shape up quite differently. Thoughts? |
Was going to write that you left out the game that was likely to sell the most this gen (non-bundled) - Wii Fit. But then I saw you excluded the Wii Series. Apart from Wii Fit Mario Kart is definitey going to be the biggest selling (Wii Play doesn't count cause it's a Wii Remote that comes with a demo)

Very interesting graph Erik. This seems really huge, since MK DS and NSMB are still moving about 70k a week, which is more than all the other contenders for game of the generation do although being on sale for much less time. If MK Wii really has the same legs, you will be right with your bold prediction.

I'm a bit cautious about comparing the handhelds with the console games, as the big hits on handhelds (Pokemon, NSMB, Nintendogs) reach numbers that no console games seem to be capable of touching, due to their insane legs. To be fair though, Nintendo's handhelds have always far outsold its home consoles (in hardware), so with the way the Wii is selling maybe a game like Mario Kart does have the potential to overtake 20mil without trouble. Nintendo's games also have the advantage of appealing to all regions, as opposed to shooters or GTA which doesn't do well in Japan.

Well, before this gen, there were only 8 different 10-million selling games on handhelds in history, and they represented only 3 franchises: Mario, Pokemon and Tetris. And 5 of them were from Pokemon.
This gen, DS will soon have 7 different 10-million selling games, representing 5 different franchises: Mario (including Kart), Pokemon, Nintendogs, Brain Training and Animal Crossing.
So I don't think the difference is between handheld and console, but between previous generations and this one.
In their first 4 gens, Nintendo had only 6 different 10-million selling home console games, and 5 of them were Mario games, the 6th being Duck Hunt.
This gen, Wii already has Wii Sports and Play across 10-million, MK Wii and Wii Fit are sure bets, Mario Galaxy and Brawl will probably reach 10M with legs, and Animal Crossing, Wii Music and Wii Sports Resort all have potential.
So I think the difference is in Nintendo, not the type of platform.
Another chart for y'all...

Yeah... it really is different when Nintendo is the leading console huh? I'm not sure if the Playstation1/2 games have ever had as great legs as what we're going to see on Mario Kart Wii / Wii Fit, so it's kind of hard to imagine.
Here is an interesting chart too:

MK Wii has not yet passed Halo 3, but if trends continue, it will have gotten over the bombastic start of Halo in about a month.
