I'm a bit cautious about comparing the handhelds with the console games, as the big hits on handhelds (Pokemon, NSMB, Nintendogs) reach numbers that no console games seem to be capable of touching, due to their insane legs.  To be fair though, Nintendo's handhelds have always far outsold its home consoles (in hardware), so with the way the Wii is selling maybe a game like Mario Kart does have the potential to overtake 20mil without trouble.  Nintendo's games also have the advantage of appealing to all regions, as opposed to shooters or GTA which doesn't do well in Japan.

Well, before this gen, there were only 8 different 10-million selling games on handhelds in history, and they represented only 3 franchises: Mario, Pokemon and Tetris. And 5 of them were from Pokemon.

This gen, DS will soon have 7 different 10-million selling games, representing 5 different franchises: Mario (including Kart), Pokemon, Nintendogs, Brain Training and Animal Crossing.

So I don't think the difference is between handheld and console, but between previous generations and this one.

In their first 4 gens, Nintendo had only 6 different 10-million selling home console games, and 5 of them were Mario games, the 6th being Duck Hunt.

This gen, Wii already has Wii Sports and Play across 10-million, MK Wii and Wii Fit are sure bets, Mario Galaxy and Brawl will probably reach 10M with legs, and Animal Crossing, Wii Music and Wii Sports Resort all have potential.

So I think the difference is in Nintendo, not the type of platform.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
