Goddamn Kaz Hirai, of course we've all heard about your little 10 year life cycle. You've only ever said it in every interview and press conference you've ever had.

QFT...
Sony still believe they are the king of the hill.

So only by staying on the market twice as long as a typical console will the PS3 win? Wow, I don't think he quite understands the logistics of competing or what it means to win. Technically if the Ps3 is going to be a two generation console shouldn't its sales be compared to the accumulated sales of both the Wii and its successor as well as the 360 and its successor?
Or hell, since everyone says the Wii is just a gamecube, couldn't we use the Wii's sales in combination with the Gamecube's sales to say the Wii will be the best selling console of last generation? So I guess the PS2 won't win after all, Lol.
Though I'm sure this comment is much appreciated by all the perterbed PS3 fans looking for a sollice in Sony's P.R. to reaffirm such beliefs that are getting harder and harder to pass as legitimate arguments in video game forums.
HA. If you have to make two consoles to compete against one, no matter the final numbers, adding cost of production and marketing you have already lost.
And you can put Wii an twice the sales of the gamecube and still be swept agaisnt the sales of PS2 (unlike gamecube, still selling and still getting games).
Obviously you have still to recover from las gen olympical defeat against PS2.
End of Year prediction:
wii: 37 m
360: 24 m
PS3: 20 m

I'm not sure I understood anything you said in your post ...
The fact is that the PS3 and PSP erased all profit made by Sony with the Playstation and PS2 (and the Wii, Gamecube, and N64 were all amazingly profitable even though they were the trailing console) so it really depends on which two consoles you add together if it will be a losing or wining combination.
The one thing that Kaz Hirai doesn't seem to understand is every leading console has had a long life, and no trailing console has ever seen long term third party support

Amen to that.
So he's saying that "yeah sure you might be neck and neck with us when you discontinue support of the 360, but since we have a 10 year plan we will outsell you overall"...
Sony needs a new PR team, some of the stuff I read is pathetic and insulting to ones intelligence! It seems they financially benefit with all the FUD they create so I don't see it stopping soon. I'm not saying microsoft don't do it, they do! But this is just too blatent.
This is not an attack on the PS3 at all, I'm not going there anymore...live and learn ;)

QFT, although I'd say he does understand but he's just exploiting the history of the PS1\PS2 and using that as "evidence" that they will support the PS3 for 10 years...
These sentences are completely unrelated in reality.
Its a shame not everyone knows that consoles get supported until they become unprofitable and unsupported by 3rd parties...

Wait. What? The wii has sold 95 million consoles already?????!!!!!!
Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

I guess 10-year life cycle is the new term of the month over at Sony. It reminds me of Pee Wee's Playhouse...I can just see Chairy going bonkers everytime a Sony rep says 10-year life cycle.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

I doubt that Microsoft XBOX 360 will not last ten years. Although, IMO this ten year life cycle thing Sony is doing does has flaws though.
-Look at the end of the SNES generation for instance. SNES was doing so good that they definitely could have lasted much longer than what they have been, BUT due to the SNES beating the Genesis, SEGA launched its next console (Saturn if I'm not mistaking) which was powerful than the SNES and Sony came in with the PS (also stronger than the SNES). Even though SNES was the best console of that time, when the next consoles came out, that threw Nintendo in a little binder that caused them to release a product (N64) that obviously wasn't ready yet.
The N64 was released late due to the new generation and as a result Nintendo lost alot of ground to the other two. Even though the N64 was the stronger console that generation, the other consoles had greater advantages that did the N64 dirty.
So basically when this generation is done (5 years or whatever) newer consoles will enter the market, delivering newer and much advanced technologies pretty much leaving the PS3 in the dust making it obsolete.
- What if there is a much more reliable and more efficient video format in 5 or years time? What will happen to the PS3 then?
-When the 360 and Wii gets upgraded early and the PS3 is still doing the 10 year thing. Will it be so bad that the PS3 will look like the Wii to the PS3 in terms of graphics.
-Graphics and sound can only go so far, which is one of the reasons why the Wii took a different approach this time around. When the PS3 is still doing the 10 year deal and all it's doing is the same thing, little by little, it has been doing since it launched; the next Microsoft console could take a different approach and then the PS3 will really be in trouble.
-The ten year deal has paid off for Sony in the past but it can backfire. How? Does anyone here think that the PS2 is holding the PS3 back? Could the PS3 have more sales than it has now without the PS2 taking potential sales from the PS3? The PS2 was a phenomenal success, (we all can agree on that right?) so why continue something that is limiting what the PS3 is trying to accomplish. As long as the PS2 is still active, there is no reason to purchase a PS3 or any console for that matter as the PS2 has the best overall value you can get right now and that's better than any console that's out right now.
.....OK, I think I'm done.
Generation 8 Predictions so far.....(as of 9/2013)
Console that will sell most: Nintendo Wii U
Who will sell more consoles between Microsoft/SONY: SONY
